Mi-Ki

I always wondered why the SCBCA didn't recognize the Mi-Ki (taken from www.scbca.org):

"Why doesn't the SCBCA recognize the Mi-Ki?

The SCBCA does not and never will recognize a trademarked breed name. We see it as an act of 'protection' for a breeder that a responsible breeders would never need. Only if the name ceases to be trademarked would the SCBCA consider the Mi-Ki for recognition. We see no good reason to trademark a breed name and do not associate our registry with those who do. "

I  haven't been to their site in a while and saw a few new things - I just found that interesting...lol  I never knew it was a trademarked name!

I also seen that they are now recognizing the Shih Tzu/Poodle cross as a French Imperial.  If nothing else, they bring forth some creative names...lol.  I have to admit that I like French Imperial better than Teddy Bear though.

The SCBCA could always register the mi-ki under another name and allow anyone who breeds the dogs and meets the SCBCA breeder requirements to register their dogs.  Trademarking a dog name is ridiculous, and I'm glad the SCBCA wants no part of it.

I noticed that the SCBCA is registering Siberian husky/Alaskan malamute crosses as Alaskan huskies.  I find this practice somewhat disturbing because there is no "recipe" for creating an Alaskan husky.  Most Alaskan huskies contain herders, hounds, and/or pointers in addition to various Northern breeds.  If the SCBCA wants to register Siberian husky/Alaskan malamute crosses, it should give them another name so that people won't confuse them with the mushers' dogs, or it could register "real" Alaskan huskies and allow the individual racers to decide what combination of breeds will best suit their needs.

I was kind of surprised the SCBCA was registering husky/malamute crosses as Alaskan huskies because, for the most part, the registry seems pretty on top of things.  I love the policy regarding breeders who sell to/through pet stores.  Every registry should have such a policy...
