Jazzy going in for surgery

tomorrow! I am not use to these females... all my other dogs have been males and you pick them up the same day. She has to stay overnight! Does anyone know if recovery period is worse or better than males... probably worse. All of us females have to go through way much more pain than the males on everything we do! We are tougher than they are! LOL

My females have always stayed overnight too.  The only thing we have had problems with afterwards is them wanting to lick.  Many years ago I had a cat who committed hari-kari in the middle of the night and chewed out both sets of her sutures and after having emergency surgery & still losing her I have always insisted that any of my females, dog or cat, come home with an e-collar.

Other than that I find them the following day wanting to be just as active as any of my males after neutering.

Good luck Jazzy - I'm sure all will go fine and when you get home I have a funny feeling you will be getting lots of loving & spoiling!

Thanks for the info. I may ask for one of those collars. I have had several male dogs neutered in my lifetime and they have never been given a collar... I will ask about it. Thanks again!

Well- I called about 3:00 today and she made it through the surgery fine. I am suppose to be able to pick her up tomorrow around 10:00. Thanks for all of the encouragement!

She's home and seems to be doing much better than Hershey did after his surgery. But of course, as I said before, I guess females are just tougher than males! She is not quite as spry as normal, but she is not whining and moaning like Hershey did. Hershey wouldn't even walk for the first few hours he was home!

You know what? They didn't give me one and I forgot all about it! I will watch her...so far she is not messing with it. I am never gone from the house more than 2 to 3 hours at a time, so I will keep a close watch on her!

Yes! I am glad you reminded me of that. I wasn't sure if that was for real or not, but I have heard several stories like that lately, so I guess it really can happen. Jazzy is sleeping very heavily right now. I guess that is good. She barely opens her eyes when I pet her. My other 2 dogs that I had done recently did not even get sleepy on the pain medicine. Hers may be stronger though. I hear the spaying is more involved than the neutering. Imagine that! Just our luck!!!

Yes its more involved, that why the gals females inside came out(sorry just had to say it).  Just watch her carefully. I did not ned the cone for my female. I just put on her t-shirt to cover the sutured area, she never bothered it.  If she does start licking at it. Get an e-collar.  Its got to stay dry.

Although the surgery for females is more involved than it is for males, in my experience, females deal with it better than males.  Perhaps it seems like a small price to pay for a lifetime without PMS.
