I have been looking for another dog and I have a question. Here where I live there isn't many breeders ,just BYB. Is it really a "bad" thing to buy from them? What are some things to look for ? Questions that I should ask? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks !!
What breed are you looking for? The idea of just what constitutes a BYB varies. I think most people agree that someone who has a pet golden and breeds it to another pet golden down the street, with little thought or sometimes even knowledge of each dog's health, temperment, or background, certainly falls under the heading of BYB. But when you get into people who breed working dogs that actually work or people who breeds pets but actually consider health, temperment, and history, the lines defining a BYB become murky.
You should be able to meet the breeder's dogs and to see where the dogs live. The breeder should be willing to give you references of other people who have bought dogs from him/her and a vet reference. The breeder should know a great deal about the breed and should be able to tell you both about the benefits and the drawbacks, including health problems, of owning the breed.
Your quest will be easier if you are looking for a working breed. Plenty of working dogs (the ones that actually have jobs) don't compete in AKC or UKC events, partially because the dogs just don't get that kind of vacation time. However, people who rely on their dogs to put food on the table, whether directly as in the case of a hunting dog who finds and/or brings back the food or indirectly as in the case of a herder who keeps the cattle from escaping and moves them into the truck to take to market, have a vested interest in producing the best dogs possible because unhealthy or tempermentally unsound dogs don't make good workers.

I think another clue to whether someone is in it just for the money with no regard to the dogs is whether or not they seem to really care where one of their pups is going to. They shouldn't only be interested in whether or not you can afford to buy a pup - they should also be concerned about the type of home you can give one of their dogs and be asking you questions as well.
I know as a breeder my self and growing up with breeders, the best advice i can give is ask the breeder to see a pedagree on both the mother and father, make sure you get a contract (even if it is a simple one) and i agree with what the others said on asking for references and seeing the breeders place and dogs. Good luck.
Yeah, what they have said so far is correct. Having been what is termed nowadays a "serious hobbiest" with Labradors for 35 years, I do think that the BYB label is something promoted by large scale producers of dogs. If they eliminate the competition, be it educated or not, they have a lot of dogs to sell... In order to buy a dog from anyone, you should understand the breed, it's faults, the tests available to avoid those faults, and what you want your dog to look like. The pedigree is important, the certification avoiding genetic defects is important, the rapport between you and the seller is important. Otherwise, get a rescue, or go to the local humane/AC and get something that appeals to you on that level.
Well, I would really love to have another yorkie, but they are soooooooo expensive. So I have been thinking of maybe a schnauzer or westie, maybe even a maltese. I have been checking the shelters here ,so far no luck. today There is a maltese mix.Adoptable Animals let's see if this link works.
She not he,is at the vet today getting spayed. She will be available for adoption when she comes back today or tommorrow. If more than one person wants to adopt they will have a draw. I'll go see if I have A chance.
Your closer to Arizona right? My mom is coming here to Arizona this weekend. If she had one you'd want i could have her bring it. Try this: http://community.webshots.com/user/tidonweiss
Ok, Shadow. I talked to my mom and she has only 1 full maltese for adoption right now. She is 9 years old though. She is 7 lbs. Very sweet. She doesn't have any others at her house but the lady she does rescue with has several dogs. My mom said to find out what you are looking for and she will check to see if they have it. They cost $100.00 to $200.00 depending on age and if they are fixed or not. If you are interested, again my mom is coming to see us next weekend and can bring one here. It would be closer for you right? Let me know as soon as you can. If you get one, i can keep it here until you get here.
I really would love to have another yorkie, maltese would be ok too but I would like a younger dog, shadow is about that age ,find out what the lady has,and we will go from there ,Thanks bunches,Debi
