When i left the house 2 hours ago Syd had a bump on her, then ijust came home a they are all over. She has gotten hives once before from eating horse poop, but today she wasnt near any and she didnt eat anything differnt that i know of. Is hives something that will go away on its own, or should i make her an appt for tomorow at the vets. She seems itchy, biting at herslf. I'd give her an oatmeal bath but its to cold out and dark. Is there anything I could do for her tonight until I call the Vet tomorow. Poor thing looks so silly with all the hives. Thanks
I am sure she is quite uncomfortable. Can't you give her an oatmeal bath inside? I know when Farley's allergies act up my vet has me give him over-the-counter Benadryl to help relieve the itchies. He weights 60 lbs and he was prescribed 2, 25 mg pills twice a day.
Ok i just called the emergancy Vets and they said NOT to give Benadry Allergy, whats the differmece between regular Benadryl and Benadryl allergy? I think the only reason i even have the Benadryl allergy is b/c my Vet told me to get that for her once before. This emergancy Vet said to bring her in, i have had bad experiances with them before trying to scam me out of money. I'm worried they are trying to do that now. I dont know what to do, take her to the ER or wait and take her tomorow to my normal Vet as long as she doesnt get worse. What would you do?
If it was me and i had given her the Benadryl before, i would give it to her this time but in a very small dose. But only if she has had it before and had no bad reactions. JMO. I know that's not much help but good luck.
just wanted to update everyone. Lastnight at 2:30 I woke up b/c Syd was scracthing a lot. I turned on the light and noticed she had gotten much worse. The hives were all over her body and her face now, and her nose was swollen and she was drooling a lot. I gave her a benadryl and called the emergacny vet, who told me to give her one more. Then she fell asleep. This morning she looks a lot better although she still has some hives. I dont know whether or not to take her to the Vet, or let them get better on their own. I'll probly end up taking her though!
I try to avoid emergency vets at all costs. Obvuiously, there are some times when you have to use one, but if it can wait then I let it wait. If you used Benedryl before then I'd use it again. Vets will prescribe different things for different dogs. Your local vet, who is more familiar with your dog, will prescribe a larger array of medicines than a vet who has never seen your dog or only seen it once or twice. They do that to protect themselves, because they don't know the history of your dog and the medicines its been prescribed before. If Benedryl works, use it, and keep that money out of the pocket of a vet who doesn't know your dog. it would be much wiser to spend it with the local vet who treats your dog on a regular basis and knows what your dog can and cannot handle. If Benedryl works again, then you may not need to see a vet at all.
