POLL: Shoud the Forum be permanently private?

Should this forum be permanently 'private' except for members only (while still allowing anyone to register and post/read without admin approval)?

Remember, I cannot see who votes for what - so give me your real thoughts.  Basically, they have to sign up (which gives me their IP) before they can come read all the good stuff they just can't stay aways from over here?  It's really a pity that their own forum isn't interesting and educational enough for them.

If someone signs up under an 'unknown name' and never posts, then after a while I will know they are only here to 'read', and thus, delete their account.  I am thinking that if you come to read then you should at least be a productive member and post as well.

Plus, kinda tears their little playhouse up....lol, and we already know that kills them.....lol  They don't seem to have the self control to stay away from here, but I can control it for them.  How does that saying go???  "Nip that puppy in the bud".....lol

Public and Private both have their pros and cons.  Maybe we should just let them keep reading since they love it here so much. "They" refers to those such as grasshoppermom, fizzy, and any others who just can't seem to stay away  .  (Notice I did not mention any specific names, therefore I am still upholding my end of the bargain - just as they are ). I will go with a majority ruling on this one.  Voting will be open for 3 days.

Technically, you were within the terms of The Treaty of Monday Chat, but you certainly were not within the spirit of the agreement.  I suggest you sleep on the idea, and if it's really important to you, put it back tomorrow.  --protodog

Hey Ansy- refresh my memory as to what Pearl's name was when she signed on here under another name. I saw some bashing on the other forum about having more than one identity and I would love to be able to remember what she signed up as over here. That would be very nice to know.

Quick question:

If the forum is private, how will people be able to read what we write etc and decide whether they want to join and participate in our discussions?

I wonder if making it a public forum will result in less members, less input. less variety etc and maybe result in the forum not lasting in the long run because it goes a bit stale?

Hello...I would like to approach a subject touched on here

it was written: saw some bashing on the other forum about having more than one identity and I would love to be able to remember what she signed up as over here.

I wrote a post about who has more then 1 idenity here...meaning TP.. And I asked why...and went to to say I thought it was done to cause trouble....IN MOST CASES...I was not talking about this forum what so ever...SOMEONE brought this place into it...and I asked why they would bring this one up in that post...I dont get it...Why is asking a legitimate question BASHING? in most cases we all know who is doing it...so they appear stupid. If you use different names at all the places you visit that is your business...Many people posted they use the same ones every where..I know I do...Yes...in the early days of this forum i am sure many did use different names to see what all the fuss was here...But not everyone did...I didnt...and several others didnt either...So please dont take every post as a bash...dont be so sensitive about this kind of stuff...

As for the board being private...I think it might be better handled with a membership...that way you have the specifics needed to track some one if you have to...So i guess I would say make it private...allowing inquiries after sign up. But, thats just my opinion...

I havn't voted yet cuz i'm undecided (i'm a libra).  On the one hand, I agree with Boxer Babe in the fact that becoming private might push potential members away but on the other hand, i see nothing wrong about being a private forum.  I really don't care what 'they' think of me or what 'they' say about me but it would be nice to have a lot of this hassle done with.  Just not sure yet but i will vote soon....lol

If the forum is private, how will you ever get new members.  Some people like to read for a bit before they take the plunge and sign on.

I agree shadow...But all are welcome to visit and post if they want...in any forum in my book..But dont go posting ugly stuff just to make waves...That isnt right...just because you can doesnt mean you should...You can get the message accross with tact in most cases...I dont know if the ones banned were banned unjustly or not..I wasnt there...But just by saying you belong here isnt a recipe for banning...I hope that was understandable...

The only truce made was between one particular member and myself.  She agreed to quit her bashing and I agreed to take her username off thie Furum.

There were NO other truce's/agreements/treaty's (lol) made so I cannot stop anyone from commenting about others or TP issues.  They are allowed to discuss everything as always, except they cannot use her name.  The individual member of TP refused to agree to anything else.

(Proto is sooooooo  going to edit me...lol)

Ok, so there was no "REAL" truce then But you know as well as I do that there is certain members who go to tp and post things to "stir the pot" and then complain about the ongoing problems.Just doesn't make sense to me. It will never stop unless it is ignored. I mean aren't we all pretty much adults here?

This forum was created to promote the free and open exchange of ideas, and I think making the forum private would go against that foundation.  Furthermore, making the forum private implies that we've got something to hide.  Do we?  I don't think so.

Shadow, you are right.  It happens from both sides.  I think the problem some have is that only one 'side' has ever admitted and apologized for it.  They others think they are too good to  admit wrong and apologize, therefore, they will continue getting bombarded with 'troll posts' as they call them.  Is is silly? Yeah.  Is it sad? Yeah.  It is life? Yeah.

I have seen every member  of the Furum who even remotely thought of being a troll apologize for their actions (and I believe they have the intentions of quitting when they do that), then they see their names slathered across TP again, or get blamed for something they didn't do and figure that if they are going to get blamed for it, they might as well do it.

If the grasshoppermom, Fizzy, and a few others would stand up and admit to some wrong doing, I really think it would stop, but they wont - because they dont want it to stop.  Their board is not allowed off topics at the time and they have no other way of keeping it interesting.  No one said they must 'go' first.  We've already done that - about 6 times now.  Not doing it again.  If they can't take it, they dont need to dish it out.

I can promise you - when they stop, the people here will as well, but like i said......they wont stop - it's all they have to make thier day interesting.  I find it horribly funny that their Terri Schaivo thread got deleted (edited) because they CAN'T talk about it....lol.  Oh well, maybe they can just read ours.  It has lots of information in it.

TP has become the laughing stock of pet forums now, and they have done it to themselves.  One of the biggest news stories going and you CAN'T talk about it????  OMG, get real.  Sure it's a pet forum, but come on........the good thing is that here, we can control ourselves enough so that we don't need "pre-school rules" that tell us what we can and can't talk about.  I don't know of another pet forum who doesn't allow SOME KIND of off topic posts.  Although we love our pets dearly, our lives entail more than just animals........and a good forum will let you discuss all that.  Maybe after they 'graduate' from pre-school they'll find a forum who can let them express themselves.  There are many good ones out there.  Because the off topics are not allowed, the 'bashing' and 'trouble' topics are about all they have to offer.

I don't have to go out of my way to prove my points about them anymore.  They are doing it themselves.
