Hi everyone. My close friend just recently rescued a lab mix puppy from a rescue organization. She got the puppy a week and a half ago and when she received her she was on antibioitics for a cold. The runny nose did not get any better, so she brought her to the vet and she was diagnosed with bronchial pneumonia. The vet also said that there was a possiblity that she could have distemper. They can't test her now because apparently she was just vaccinated and all tests would come back positive either way. I'm not sure why she wasn't immunized but I think its because she was found tied up and abandoned when the rescue organization found her. I'm not really sure of all the specifics. I was wondering if anyone has had experience with pups with pneumonia or distemper. I have done some research on both, but I was wondering if I could get some personal experiences--sometimes thats better than reading facts online. I have forbid my friend from reading about distemper because we dont' know yet if she has it and I dont' want her to get more freaked out than she already is.
If anyone has any insights they would be most appreciated. I just spoke to my friend and while the pup was very sick yesterday (sleeping all day) she seems to be perking up a little bit today. She is eating a little bit, regular peeing/pooping and even playing a little bit. Is that a good sign that it isn't distemper?
I had a puppy named Chloe who suffered from a congenital defect in her throat and sadly was put to sleep at 4 months old. However, during the two months that we had her, she developed two seperate cases of pnuemonia due to inhalation on her food and water into her lungs. Both times we easily cured her with medication. She was tired and slept most of the time but would start perking up as she got better. Chloe also had two surgeries and was basically a very sad defect of people not fixing their pets. We spent almost $5000 on Chloe in less then two months and we finally decided that she was not living a good life at all and so we decided to have her PTS. We miss her every single day. Sorry, I kind of got off subject.
I don't have any help for you about distemper but I know that pnuemonia was the least of our problems at the time. Heck, Chloe even had kennel cough when we got her. That poor dog never had a break. :(

Sorry, i just read this. YES, i had a puppy with the same problem. We got a free shepard mix and when he came home, he had a goopy nose. I also had a 5 month old daschund too. The daschund, after 2 weeks got majorly sick and started collapseing. I imediately took him to the vet and after tests were run, found out he got distemper(he had had ALL of his shots). At the vets office he declined fast and started bleeding from his nose. The vet told me he had about an hour of life left. I chose to put him to sleep. I brought in the shepard puppy and found out he had distemper from his father and had given it to my daschund. He was going to live but after a week, developed seizures where he tried to attack us when he came out of them. My son was a new born baby at the time so we decided it would be best to put him to sleep too. The vet said he would also have a decreesed immune system if he lived. I had to wait 6 months while bleeching every inch of my house before i could get another dog and when we did, she had to stay at my mom's while getting all her vaccines before she could come to our home. It was a bad situation and I will NEVER forget it. Just thougt i'd share because it can happen to anyone, even if the dog has been vaccinated.
