I wanted to post a beware thread for cat owners who let their cats outside. My brother has a cat that has been an inside/outside cat for a couple years. A month or so ago, she started getting sick and my brother took her to the vet. After extensive test, they found out she has feline AIDS.....yes i said AIDS. Now she is a strictly inside cat and has to take meds. to boost her immune system. She gets sick easy and there is no cure (like human AIDS). She was bit by a feral cat and that's how she contracted it. She has had all her vaccines, including feline lukimia. She has a large risk of dying from a simple cold so it is a big stress for him. I just wanted everyone with cats to know so this doesn't happen to you.
That is actually quite common in the feral cats in my area. Feline Leukemia is another rapid spreader as well. I had a scare with that in one of my cats last year, but the tests came back negative. This is a good example of why its so important to vaccinate.
I've met many people who were shocked to hear that cats can get AIDS. We like to think of it as a human olnly disease, but kitties get it too.
