How do you know when....

your dog needs his nails trimmed? I have never had Calvins nails trimmed and i have no idea when to take him to get them done. is there any" rule of thumb " about this?

They should not touch the floor when they walk. That is the ideal length. Should not hear the tick tick tick, thanks for reminding me, I need to dremel my three.

Oscars need trimed too. I have to take him to Petco to do it because he will only let a stranger do his nails. One lady there does it for free but the other lady charges 8 dollars. Still cheap.

If the nail is causing the toes to splay, or turn at angles they are too long. The hook is all I clip off, so that the nail is not claw shaped, but straight.

lol I have a hard time with my dobies. their quick grows with the nail. Problem is that most of it is a crumbly type quick and can be cut but because their nails are so dark I never know where it starts and ends. I let the vet do the dobes nails that way if he quicks them he can take care of it. The stop powder just doesnt work for me. Plus I am so chicken hearted I would cry for days if I hit the quick. Usually every two weeks is a good idea some grow faster then others but just keep checking them and like she said if you see them getting especially long or start to hear the clicking then it is time for a trimming.

Kitty's mom said it right.  You can see where the nail gets fatter and that's the quick so cut before that.  Puttin is right in using a dremel.  They work sooo much better.

Pits- Flour works to stop bleeding too.

thank you everyone! Calvin has black nails and it is hard to see where the quick it too. I also noticed on some of then that the quick seems to be under almost all of the nail, just like pits was saying. But it seems crumby too........well it could be dirt from outside....hmmmm....LOL Can you tell i am a new dog owner?!!! ?? LOL Their nails are so much thicker than cats so i don't think i will be doing them myself either. I can do my cats no problem....well as long as they let me anyways!!!
