Yah, that is a more unusual breed. Can't be too many around. I always advise people that want a purebred to get into the local/national breed clubs, all are cheap to join. Get them to send updates/newsletters to you, you can never be too informed. Find out what the breeds faults are. Make sure you only look at pups that are from parents tested for hereditary defects of the breed. Club members are the best source of "dirt" on each others breeding/sales practises, although you do need to take w/a grain of salt any gossip. If there is a specialty show, that is for only your breed and they are the best. I walk around until I find the dog that looks most perfect TO ME and find out more about the owner at that point. I don't give much for who is doing what in the ring, I find something special in a dog, I want to know more about it's lines etc. In the fall there was a BIS winner in a national show, a black Standard Poodle bitch from Austrailia. She was the most beautiful, intelligent, alluring, poodle that I had ever seen. You must be sure when you look at the pup that it is what you want...decisions are way easier when you know exactly what your dog should look like. All pups are cute...

As usual, good advice, Kitty.  I will look into joining the PWDCA.  They've already been great about giving me information.

Finding out as much as I possibly can about the dogs and the breeders is one of the main reasons I started looking into this a year before I actually purchase a pup.  In the next few months I have plans to visit two of the three breeders I have contacted in the state.  I want the chance to see the dams and sires and I will have the opportunity to see one of the breeder's brand new litters in July.  I'm looking forward to being able to see the differences in how the breeders operate and the differences in their breeding stock.

You're exacty right when you say that all puppies are cute, so that's why I started with adult Porties and have traced them back to the breeders that are closest to me.  I haven't even bothered to keep in contact with anyone that won't give me proof of genetic testing.

Huron...it's so sad, but I know I can get almost anything I want from my hubby!  Honestly, he would be able to go look at the puppies, think they're adorable and go home without giving them a second thought... he REALLY does not want another dog, but he always wants me to be happy and will make any sacrifice to see that I am.  He always tells me that he loves Kula, but doesn't like HAVING Kula...he just would really prefer not to be bothered with all the responsibility that comes along with pets.  He didn't want to get Kula either, but did it to make the kids and I happy.  Yet, he still takes Kula on every errand with him, makes sure he gets to go to the park as often as possible, and spends a lot of time on training.  He'll do the same with the new dog too. I'm so lucky...he's the BEST!

Moencat..I understand about the hubby thing,.,.Mine I would usually sing the prases of..is just coming off of my "you know what list"..from earlirer today...lol..But...he is the one that cant say no...he just loves animals and if I let him we would be overrun with them...Good luck..and it is really something that your shoping with your head instead of your heart..I like the fact that your getting all the information that you can now and research the breed and breeders..that is really some thing..Im more impatient then that...I hope you find just the right fit for your household..good luck

Huron, you made me laugh...my hubby spends lots of time on that list as well, no matter how wonderful I think he is at the moment!  Guess that's the reality of being married.  It's always nice to have a reminder that everyone goes through the same BS because it sure can feel kind of  lonely when you're in the middle of it!  You'll be back to singing DH's praises before you know it, and mine will be back on the doody list just as quick!

Hi Moencat,

I asked them yesterday and I will post the convo. One is in Canada one on east coast. But they talk of the energy of the PWD and all that. Ask them anything you like. To get a better idea of what they are like.
