I decided today to go see Rain and try her new saddle and bit. I have had a different bit and my old saddle on her before but no one has EVER been on her back. I tried once and she flipped out! So i backed off and did more ground work with her. Well today, i went to see her and fit her saddle. I needed to make a few little adjustments cuz she is a small horse. And i put her bridle on. She was chomping on the bit for awhile but finally relaxed. Here are a couple pics of her with her new saddle and bridle:
I am sooooo excited....i am jittery with happiness. I started from the bar of the round pen and just put my foot in the stirrup. I was shakeing soooo hard.....lol. I tried to calm down but it was impossible....lol. Then I went higher and leaned over her. If she started to get upset, i talked to her and rubbed her. If she stood still, i retreated. I kept getting further and then retreating and finally......got on. She stood the whole time! Then I just sat there and let her walk around the round pen with me on her. I got off, took everything off and parised her BIG TIME. I left on a good note so it should be easy next time. Just had to share.
That saddle is perfect for short backed horses. Those big square western saddles cut into the horses like Arabs and Morgans, talk about making them crazy. Looks like it will hold you both directions if she tries to unseat you too. I had a skittish horse that I would ride at night and tell stories to, gentled him up like a big puppy. At first the ears were flat back, then one up, one down, then eventually, 2 up-tipped back to hear what I was saying. I used to make up fantasy stories about the stars, that would steal his feet when he lifted them too high... I had a straight bar with a roller bit for him, when I was not using a one sided leather jaw rein. I would put peanut butter in the roller so that he would be busy trying to get it out, and not notice he was not fighting me.
Fits good huh? The peanut butter is a good idea. I was told a basic snaffle is good so i just got that. We will see how she does. I talk to her all the time....lol I can't stop smiling!
Beautiful. I have always loved the beuaty of the horse. When I was a kid, If I was doodling any drawing, it was either a horse or dog. One thing i love about poodle is with their faces shaed, they sort of remind me of horses.
Them's the best kind. My love was a $90. horse. He had been dressage trained, but tried to kill his previous rider, then also, my dad-Mr. Equipment. The horse constantly reared up and tried to fall backwards onto his rider. I caught my dad in shoot him mode one day, and asked if I could try him...5 mos. later, I was backing up figure 8's with no bridle or saddle, my dad caught me "out of equipment" he shrugged in disbelief, and said"that horse is yours" The horse, hearing his voice(he had been concentrating on me, and did not know dad was there) threw up his head, flattened his ears back, and began that high, mincing pace. I made sure when I sold him(given the choice between 3 horses we owned, taking the one most valuable on paper, I should have just cut my heart out instead)that I sold him to an experienced FEMALE rider...
Wow. It's amazing what we learn with them. My parents bought a horse from the auction for me when i was 14. She was a dapple Arab and EXTREMELY well trained at the auction. My parents thought she'd be perfect for me and i loved her colors. We later found out she was so well behaved cuz she was drugged and that she had been very badly beaten. We had her about a month before i rode her for the first time becuse she had some teeth problems (or so we thought) cuz she kept bleeding in her mouth. Anyway, one day i decided to take her out into the pasture behind our house. I liked the fields there cuz they were plowed and the dirt was deep and soft. It made for good exercise for the horses. I saddled her up and with my little brother tagging along, went around to the field. It was about a half a block behind our house. I had her in the field just walking a little while my brother went looking for frogs and abandoned coyote dens in the field. She started getting really figity so i decided to just head back home. Not even 10 seconds after that thought, she caught me off guard and reared. I had never had a horse rear on me so i lost my grip and fell off backwards. I hit the ground with a thud and looked up as i saw her coming down backwards. All i could think to do was roll away but i got as far as on my right side before she landed on me. She was on top of me for what seemed like forever just rolling back and forth because i was making her high centered and she couldn't get her footing to get up. I remember thinking it should hurt but didn't feel a thing at the time. She finally got up and shook herself off and looked down at me like "what just happened?" I was thinking the same thing until i moved and OMG talk about pain! I have been through a lot of operations and broken wrists and ankles in my life but nothing hurt like that. I managed to get up very slowly and walk home but it took me a half hour to shuffle a half a block! The horse had just walked home. My parents were gone for the day so my little brother and i just sat on the couch and cried togeather....hehe. I later found out i had broken many bones on my left side and the only thing that saved my life was landing in that plowed field. The horse could never be touched after that without rearing so my parents took her back to the auction and made sure they knew she needed a VERY experienced trainer. I didn't think i would ever get on a horse again but my mom convinced me to get on her morgan who was the calmest horse ever and so i finally did. His relaxed attitude with me is what made me like to ride again but i will be cautious every time i ride now......lol
