Here are pictures of the newly named Dominique. She has a healed over broken jaw, which you can sort of see in the picture of her meowing. You can see how dirty she is. She is like that all the time. She is starting to gain weight now that the mice and birds are out. She gets pretty skinny in the winter. Anyways, here she is...........(you can click on the pics to see them bigger)
For those of you who do not know, this cat lives next door to my MIL2B and she is very neglected (obviousely) we are planning on snatching her up here really soon. She is one way or another coming home with us, we are going to ask them to let us have her and if nothing else, I will just take her. For 5 years now I have watched this cat just beg for attention. We would give it but we only saw her once, maybe twice a week. Only now am I really able to take her. We are going to give her a nice warm bath and clean her up, plus get her some medicine to help with the pain in her jaw. This cat never comes in their house. Does anyone have any ideas for litterbox training an older (8-10 yrs old) outdoor only cat?? I really need to know how to get her to be a indoor cat. We have completely fallem in love with her and I won't let her go another year without love.
She is beautiful! Hopefully they'll agree to let you take her so as not to cause any potential problems down the road.
As far as litter training her, I've never had to train an adult cat who's never been inside before. If it were me I'd probably pretty much restrict her to an uncarpeted room for a few days which you put a litter box into. Even outdoor cats like to cover it and if the litter box is there she'll probably catch on pretty quickly. Once she has used it a few times then I'd try giving her a little more freedom in the house. With all the loving she is going to be getting I'm sure she will thrive with you!
I can't make the pictures bigger and from the smaller pictures I cannot see what you are talking about. What exactly is it that the neighbors are doing to neglect this cat?
My cat stays inside, but I would hope that if the law allows and my cat did stay outside that someone would not feel like they could take it because it was dirty (cats hate baths) and because someone else thinks my cat should stay inside.
If the people let you take the cat, that is one thing, but I would think twice about just taking it from them.
well, Jawlaw, This cat for the last 5 years(and longer) has been left outside in all weather extremes, she has had a broken jaw with no medical attention ever given to her. The other cat that they had outside with her was killed about a month ago by a stray dog. They could have cared less about him. They have three dogs currently who are very neglected, matted and filthy. AC has been called on them a few times and everytime they just get rid of their dogs and after a while get more. This cat lives on a VERY busy street where the city bus runs quite frequently throughout the day. She spends more time at my MIL2B's house then at her own. I have watched this cat get horribly thin because they never feed her, we feed her at my MIL2B's house but before we did, she got so thin I wasn't sure she would survive. This cat is not loved and very neglected. If I were to not take her, I would be allowing this to continue. I can't and couldn't live with myself if I let this continue.
I am going to talk to them about letting us have her. They will probably be happy to have her gone. The only thing they could try to say was that they "loved her too much to let me have her", in that case, they would have to prove it to me. She would have to get healthier and get cleaned once in a while and she would have to see the vet.
Just for your information, Jawlaw, the stains on this poor kitty are not just dirt, but are also urine stains from a tiny cardboard box that they put out for her in the winter because they were confronted on where she slept at night. It got too cold for her to get out of her box and so she would potty in her box. Yeah, that's love.
This cat, unless they start all od a sudden taking great care of her, IS coming home with me.
Sorry i just read this so it is a late reply...............lol
IMO, if you know the cat is being neglected (which it sounds like you do), then absoultely take her. As for litter box training, i have an older cat who spent the first year of his life outside. He had no idea how to box train and, yes, there were some accidents. All i did was out several (like 4) litter boxes around the house. If he pooed somewhere other than the litter box, i would pick it up and put it in the litter box, then show him. After awhile, i was able to eliminate one box at a time until there was one left and it was the one he used to most. He is strictly and inside cat and now i have 2 cats and one box.
As for bathing cats, they need baths just like dogs do. Wether they like it or not.....lol A quarter or more of my mom's clients have cats (she is a groomer). My cats get full bathes once month at least.
*Please be careful with an outside cat and make sure you have her tested for any diseases.
I think it is a great thing you are doing! The world needs more caring people like you
Oasis- my cat is about 6 years old and has never had a bath...lol. I brush her so she doesn't shed as much, but she is always clean..doesn't smell. I would have to put on an armored suit to give her a bath...not brave enough to attempt it...lol
Katz- your 2nd response with more a more detailed explanation makes more sense. I was hoping there was more to it than what you put in your initial post. Good Luck
Sorry if it sounded rude. My cats also get bathed about once a month or so. One cat is about 2 1/2 and the other one is almost 9 years old. This one will get pampered just as much.
Thanks for the support. I will let you know when I get her. We are finally putting our fence up. I want the dogs to be able to be outside when I bring her home.
I have heard of people that bathe their cats, but I have had 3 different ones in my life time...all for at least 10 years (except the one I have currently) and I have never been able to bathe them. They were all too wild. I should have started when they were young but I did not do it.
Am I the only one whose cats are to wild to bathe?? I would be one big bloody scratch if I tried to bathe her...lol
I have to agree...bathing a cat is not fun..but i have done so for as long as I can remember..I had persians and I bathed them several times a year and did flea baths as well..Especially when my house caught on fire and had my animals boarded for a long time..the cats..were in deplorable shape...had smuggled them into the apartment we were in temporally, after the boardin g place had them like 4 months. The dog stayed for 10 months all together. The cats when bathed the water was red from blood..they were so flea ridden that they were anemic. It was a mess..But thankfully they recovered. Good luckwith the cat...
I would be afraid to ask them to have her cause you never know if they will move her so you can't get to her. If I were you, I'd take her without asking, but that's just me. I can't think about how the people feel since they don't care about her apparently, nor would I care how they feel. (This is why I like animals better) ha!
