Of the people who have had their pet PTS...

Did you stay in the room or leave?  I have a feeling Kitty may have to be put down in the next weeks or months. I really don't want to see her die, I wish she would die in her sleep. I also don't want to leave her alone. I know I'll be in there with her if she does get pts. I just wanted to hear some experiences. I've never had to have a pet pts, and I've never had a pet die either.

I was there when they PTS Missy. In our case, it was very calm and peaceful, more so than I had imagined. There was no outward indication that something major had just happened to her, it just looked like she went to sleep. They first gave her just a little to make her drowsy, and after she dozed off they gave the rest. For me, it was painful but it was something that I needed to do.

My mom decided not to be there when her dog was PTS because it is not the last memory that she wanted to have. She wanted to remember her at home, playing or snoozing on the bed. My dad took her and stayed with her.

My mom didn't love her dog any less than I loved mine. Different people deal with grief in different ways. I am sorry you are having to deal with this. I know how bad it sucks.

We just had to deal with this situation a couple months ago, Heff. When we put Eli down, I wanted to be there. I didn't want him to think that we took him there and just were leaving him. He was mainly my doggie, so I sat on the floor with him while they gave him the shots. I just kind of held onto him for a while after he was gone and cried. It is possibly the hardest thing you'll ever have to do, put a family member to sleep. But you know you've got to do it for their sake, their comfort and their health. You do it because you love them so much. It is the most selfless act you'll ever have to deal with and it sucks. Our vet let us sit in there for like 1/2 hour, we could have stayed there longer, I'm sure, but by that time, we'd wept enough I think. We just went home and I laid on the couch and Mollie and Chopper came up to me and cuddled with me. I think they knew and they were just trying to comfort me about it. Neither of them showed any grief at all till 2 weeks later, when they knew that we were done crying over it. Chopper got somewhat depressed, wouldn't eat for a few days, I think that's how he showed grief. Mollie just moped a little and didn't get into fights with Chopper as much, I think. It is very hard, but as time goes by, you'll feel better about it and maybe even want another kitty. Not to replace her but to show her that you still have love to give to another. I hope this helps Cheer up!!!

Yeah, my dad already said he would get us another kitten. I couldn't choose because I'd want them all. We plan to go the the humane society that I got Sophie at. They were great. I remember when we went to get Sophie, Matt and I went to the cat room and I told mom to come and she said no no (she would want all the kitties) and we went on and then a few minutes later, she came in and goes "YOU MADE ME DO IT" with a smirk on her face.

We had many pets pts when I was a kid, but I never knew anything about it...Mom and Dad always just gave us the bad news when they came home.  However, about 5 years ago, when my mom had her dog Sophie pts, we were ALL there.  The vet came to my mom's house and Sophie was surrounded by all the people that loved her most.  Both of my kids were there (but encouraged to stay in Grandma's room if they wanted), and Sophie laid in my mom's lap during the procedure.  Both of my kids decided to stay (they were in kindergarten and 2nd grade at the time).  It was very peaceful, and now there's NO WAY that I could NOT hold Kula if and when it comes to that....but I could totally understand if you DON'T want to be there. Everyone says goodbye in their own way.

Do whatever makes you feel comfortable....I'm so sorry to hear about Kitty!

When I had to have Elgin, my Great Dane, PTS we were with him.  I agree it is a very hard thing to do but it was very peaceful and I think comforting in a way for all of us as well as him.  When Rufus was at the vet for some tests for what we thought was pneumonia, the vet called us to tell us that it was actually cancer and the humid weather that we were having & which was going to get worse would make him extremely uncomfortable, very hard for him to breathe and also that there was no treatment that would help him. Since he was already sedated because of the tests, we had the vet give him the final shot without us as we felt it would be easier on him.

You need to do what is right for you whichever it may be.  It is hard when we lose them whether it is us making the decision or nature.  We need to hold on to our fabulous memories and open our hearts to another furpal which is a great testament to our lost ones.  Some people find it helps to bring another into their family right away while for others a time lapse is needed.  There is no right or wrong.
