Sydney got demodex mange about 3 months ago, give or take. Her chin and chest and stomach got very red and she had it a little on her legs. She got treated and the redness went away, and the hair on her chin grew back and some hair grew back on her chest. Her skin turned blackish but i heard that is normal, means they are getting better. Well its been three months now, her skin is still blackish and she now has hardly any hair on her stomach, when i rub her stomach I am rubbing skin, not hair. Her hair also hasnt really grown backk on her chest. Its not red so I'm not worried about her having mange agian, but could it take this long for the hair to grow? Will it ever come back? Also I noticed a red cut/scab thingy on her chin, but I think it is from the cat, cause they play all the time and the cat attacks her head, and she has those sharp teeth. I'm just worried cause when you look at her chest and stomach she looks dirty from the lack of hair and the black skin. Just wondering if anyone knows if this is normal, I'm gonna call my vet later.

I have had a dog with demodex. We treated it with Ivermectin. However, we caught it very early before there was much hair loss at all, so I am afraid I am not much help answering your hair re-growth question. Did she get actual sores so that there may be a scarring factor? Let us know what the vet says. I would be interested to know.
We rescued a dobe female once who was pregnant and had a bad case of demodex generalized. There are two types. Generalized and localized. Localized is much easier to deal with as it is only in a small area and does not usually spread. The pups were fine till about three months old and then they started getting it bad. We used ivermectin and Cephlexin antibiotics. You have to be really careful they do not get bad soars because they can get a staff infection and it can be the death of the dog. Normally we always treat with both even if there are no soars visible because it can prevent them from getting infected. As for regroth it takes a while. We rubbed them down with baby oil every day and work it into the skin it keeps the skin from drying out and helps the hair to grow.

I have heard lots about this ivermectin...and I didnt no that you could put baby oil on dogs..but I guess it would be ok as long as none of the skin was abraded...P&D...did the mom just have it or did the pups too? I have heard that it is genetic...but then that is is caused by a mite..I know they say not to breed a dog with demodex...I was sold a male with it..and we ended up selling the 3 dogs we had and he was neutered and given as pet...But the breeder (yeah right) claimed that he was just stressed...and would be fine..She knew I wanted to breed (minpins) and sold him to me any way..Well..they were not for us so they are gone..But I just wondered what happened in your case..if in fact the pups got it too or not..Thanks in advance..
YES I BELIEVE I HAD SAID THE PUPS HAD GOTTEN IT TOO. YES DEMODEX IS HEREDITARY AND SERCOPTIC IS CONTAGIOUS. DEMODEX IS CAUSED BY A MITE. ALL MAMMALS HAVE THIS MITS BUT NOT ALL HAVE PROBLEMS FROM IT. DOGS WITH DEMODEX HAVE AN INABILITY TO FIGHT OFF THE MITE AND THUS THE MITE TAKES OVER. MOST DOGS DO BREAK OUT FROM STRESS. TYPICALLY THIS IS A NORMAL THING WITH DOGS THAT HAVE A LOCALIZED CASE OF IT. THOSE WITH A WEAKER SYSTEM THAT GET A GENERALIZED CASE OF IT CAN BREAK OUT HAVING SUFFERED NO STRESS AT ALL. YES YOU CAN PUT BABY OIL ON A DOG. WE HAVE EVEN USED OLIVE OIL AS WELL. I USED BABY OIL ON MY DOGS EVERY TIME I BRUSH THEM. WE ARE NOT TALKING SLICKING THEM UP WITH IT BUT IT HELPS MAKE THEIR COATS SHINY AND SOFT.
