What is wrong with Sandy??

OMG, i was at the park with my mom, siblings, aunt and cousins, and we took Sandy.  We go to the park in the evenings all the time, and Sandy always comes with us, and i've never had any problems with her before, except jumping up on people.  but other than that she's like a perfect dog while at the park.  well today we're sitting there, and my aunt was like Tara there's a little dog behind you.  Sandy is normally good with other dogs, but as soon as i turned to look at this dog, she saw him and totally freaked.  she lunged forward at this dog, and i had hold of her with both hands by her collar, and she was dragging me towards him.  i was yelling at her to stop, and yelling at this dog to go.  sandy was dragging me all over the place, i had my legs wrapped around her, but she still wouldn't stop. finally my mom was able to get the little dog to go away (his owners were all the way on the other side of the park...stupid people) but sandy was still yanking me everywhere.  she ended up biting her own lip and dripping blood all over the place.  so my aunt went to go and get tissue, while my mom was looking for the dogs owners.  and then these two people walk by with their two dogs and she loosed it again, and again starts dragging me everywhere.  i had more control that time though and literally pinned her to the ground.  omg i was furious, and she knew it too.  what the heck has gotten into her, she has never had problems with other dogs before, so i don't know what her problem was tonight.  do you think it could possibly have to do with the fact that she was spayed? she was spayed about 2 months ago, and up until tonight she hasn't had any problems.  i duno, and suggestions as to what the heck might be wrong with my dog would be lovely.  cause she scared the heck out of me tonight.  i didn't think i was going to be able to stop her from going after that dog, i honestly thought i was going to have to have her pts for attacking and killing the poor little thing.

I'm not sure why she would be doing that but what i'd do is not let her go a couple times.  Let her see that she's not allowed to go if she behaves that way.  Then bring her but keep her on a leash.  If she does it again, take the privlage away again.  Just a suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion.  When we go to the park tomorrow she is definetly NOT going.  And she'll know we're going too, cause we go at the same time everynight, and my mom always hollars get ready we're going to the park....and its at that time sandy runs to the door...so hopefully it'll help!

I know a little something about dog aggression. What breed is Sandy? Just curious. I knew at one time but do not remember. I want to think pit mix, but I could be wrong. Dog aggression normally starts showing itself at maturity, usually around or about 2 years. It is no reason to have a dog PTS, but does take extra caution from, you, the owner. It can and does typically start suddenly. There is actually a term for this. It is called "turning on." A dog who is going to be dog aggressive will usually turn on around the time of sexual maturity. This does not mean that you must suddenly worry about your dog attacking you or your family, but it does mean that dog parks and any socialization with other dogs off-leash (whether it's your dog off-leash or other dogs off-leash) should be stopped. It is not the fault of the owner for not properly socializing with dogs, in the case that you have been socializing from the get-go, but a part of the dog that is genetically pre-programmed. Some dogs just don't like other dogs, and it does happen suddenly. The important thing is to be aware of this and not to deny it because you have such a sweet dog. I have two sweet dogs, but they would love nothing more than to rip each other apart. Remember that dog aggression and human aggression are separate and unrelated. Feel free to PM me or reply with any questions about this. I have experience with dog aggressive, human friendly dogs and will help as best I can.

Well up until today we thought she was a pit mix, but theres another post, i think she may be staffy.  You said shiny that it normally starts at about 2 years, and Sandy will be 5 in june.  i wasn't going to have her pts because of her little fit, only if she attacked and killed the poor little thing.  she's never showed any agression towards us, and as much as she freaked me out, i'd still like to believe she never would.  while we're playing if her tooth so much as touches me she will back away and go to her bed.  we're going to try leaving her home next time, and then when we do take her to the park, we're going ot make sure we're far enough away from other dogs, and someone else is going ot have to hold her, because she dragged me all over the place.  thank you so much shiny for your help....you've defeintly helped calm me down tonight!

Sandy...I would also agree it is dog aggression. I dont know if skipping the park a day would help..they dont remember what they are getting left out for..just like disapline more then a few minutes after somethingis done..they actually dont know what they did to get disaplined. I would follow Shinys lead on this one. I too have a dog aggressive Shepherd..but she is  so with only small dogs..She seems to tollerate larger dogs..so..I guess she is  just a bully...she attacked 2 of my 3 minpins i had last year and one of my minin schnauzers and rehomed the smaller dogs since the shepherd is almost 4 and pretty set in her pattern. We do not have dog parks by me..I live on 10 acres..and the whole thing is a park..just no other dogs and if there were I bet the territorial thing would cause agression...My Sam...(male shepherd) just hates other males..He lunges the fence with my old brittney..and we keep them seperated...I thought we had that problem licked when we sold the schnauzer..but he decided different. So..again we are letting them out in stages..making potty time a big rotation chore..but I can not have a 90 pounder attacking a 12 year old 50 (or could be 60 pound) brittney...and he does the same with my shamus (minin schnauzer) Shamus is scrappy...but i dont want any mishaps..so life is never dull here..I say follow up with shiny..she has lots of experence and wis willing to help..I wish you all the luck..I know that you love Sandy and she has been good until now..she just might think she is protecting you...Never can tell what goes through a dogs mind...Let us know how it all works out...Take care

Did you only have a collar on her? You should have a nice thick harness, I would think that way she can't slip out of her collar. Thats what a pit boxer mix did to get to my sisters dog. On leash too of course. If she gets so untrustable. You could muzzle her.

I was wondering if maybe the thought of another dog coming up behind you sent her into protection mode.

I know that Oscar is very wary of strange dogs. I always let him meet new friends on a leash because I don't know if he will like them or not. But after a few minutes of sniffing I can let him go.

All she had on was a collar, we left the harness at home last night.  well she was on her leash to.  i never let her off of her leash at the park, just in case of something like this.  im thinking it might have been the protection idea though, because last night when i took her for a pee before bed we saw a little dog and she was fine with it, didn't bother with it at all.  so maybe she was just in her doggy way trying to protect me from the adorable little grey dog that was behind me
