Well, most of you know that Shadow is a senior and that I got him in November. He was never neutered, which really doesn't bother me considering his age and other factors. My vet said it wouldn't be worth the risk of having him nuetered .I haven't had any other vets opinion on that.My only problem is how some react, they act like he has a contagious disease,Has/does anyone have a dog that hasn't been fixed and feel like people look down on you? Let me ad that I do promote spaying.
Every furpal I have had has been spayed/neutered but I have never adopted a senior who hadn't been. You are going on the advice of your vet, who in my opinion is the one to listen to. I am also all for having them "fixed" unless they are prime candidates for breeding but sometimes medical reasons, although normally pro-neutering, advise against it. Those people who get on their high-horse pedestal without knowing or understanding all the facts are people who's opinion wouldn't bother me one bit. Shadow is not their responsibility. Don't let them get to you if they don't understand.

Denise, you always have the nicest things to say,you are welcomed in my thread anyday.
i am not going to have my frenchie neutered until i decide about showing him or even breeding him in a few years with my female. i wouldnt worry about it .it doesnt sound like your planning on starting a puppymill or anything. especially since he is an old dog. dont worry about what anyone else thinks. my family used to give me flack because i was a biker and wore my vest with my club patches on it, hung out in bars, and fought anybody ,even guys, that got in my face. but i have mellowed. the leathers are in my closet and my bike is parked. and i have learned to take things in stride and not sweat the small stuff. when i met quinn, i settled down and am now a homebody and content to be home with my family. and i dont care what people think about me .period. so relax and dont worry wether your dog is neutered or not . if you dont have a problem with it ..............then there you go !
Shadow I would chalk that up to...In your house it is only your business what you do...Your not condoning mass breeding having a unaltered dog...if you have no mate of it..Your following vets orders...So..let them eat cake those who have comments...At least your dog goes to the vet..some cant even say that much...So..do what YOU think is best for him..and let the other stuff slide off your back like water on a duck as they say...
Dusty...we are finding out more and more about you girly...we need to hear more about Quinn...he sounds like a miracle all wrapped up in a mans outfit..lol...I love my hubby ...just he gets on my nerves at times and i cant find too much good to comment on..then others i can just gush about him...right now..im some where in the middle..I think we were all a Wild child at one point in our lives..fun to see im not alone..
Beeper is not neutered. He just turned 6 on Monday. We have never got him neutered because we were tossing around the idea of breeding him. We were thinking about getting him neuterd when we go to get Bacon done but have since reconsidered. We are still going to get Bacon done but after talking to our vet she said that Beeper's habits and personality will not change because of his age. We also do not have a problem with him marking in the house. So we dont think it is worth putting him through the pain of it.
they say that unaltered males who are not breeding tend to develope prostate problems later in life which I really have mixed feelings about. I have seen male dogs intact their entire lives and live 13 years with no such problems. The biggest concern is an unaltered male getting out because he cathces a females scent whicn they can catch as far as five miles. Thats only a concern because most people are not very cautious or responsable with their pets. I used to breed dobes and I spayed my female and left the male intact. I am not breeding him nor am I studding him out to other breeders.I couldn't care less what anyone thinks about my choices. Though I am getting all these boogers snipped soon. I have a small female mix breed who the vet says would be at risk if I spayed her. I don't owe anyone any explaination for my choices and neither do you.

If, at the advice of my vet, I was told it would be better not to neuter then I wouldn't. If neighbors are worried about their females, then they should have their breeding stock kept in close quarters when in season or have them fixed. It works both ways.
As long as you have control of your dog and he can't get out of your fence/house, then I see no problem. Yes, instinct makes animals go mad when they sniff a female.........but again, those females should be fixed. If they are not healthy enough to get fixed, they shouldn't be running the streets.
You're in a catch-22 situation, but I would not risk my dogs life to get him neutered. I'd just keep a closer eye on him.
We went through this with Piper. He never showed any interest of going anywhere because he was so scared so we figured a female wouldn't bother him. However, we knew how strong the instinct was so we talked to our vet first. After him telling that he found piper to be of good enough health to be neutered, we did it. If he would have told us that neutering him would present a huge risk to his life then we wouldn't have,
