Oh i have an alpha female cat the rules my house. I also have Calvin. I have kept them separated in different areas at all times since my cat, Cailah doesn't seem to like Calvin. I do have them interact with each other but Calvin tries to go near her and she gets hissy and tries to bat at him. I have a baby gate in the kitchen so Calvin can stay in there when the cats are out in the living room. The only problem is, is that Cailah jumps over the gate and lays on the floor just so Calvin goes to her. Its almost like she wants a reason to kick his butt. So i am wondering, should i let them get into little spats and let the cat run for it after she tries to mess with Calvin or should i keep them seperate. I would like to have all my animals out and about all the time. I am not worried about my cat I am worried for my poor puppy. Any suggestions?????
I would let the cat and puppy work it out themselves, if the dog gets too close and the cats swats him, then the puppy will learn quickly. My girls have gotten swatted tons of times and now we are one big happy family. Swatting and hissing and growling are normal, especially when trying to establish rank. I would let them all work it out themselves, now if they actually start a real full on fight, then I would seperate them.
Hope this helps you, if you have any more questions please ask, i got 3 cats and 3 dogs so I struggled with this too. Now everyone plays together and sleeps together! Its great!`
ok ....eeeps i am scared....lol Should i just let them all out into the living room then? The cats have an escape if they need it, they can go upstairs. Calvin isn't allowed up there. This might sound dumb but i am afraid Cailah will scratch Calvin's eye or something ....that wouldnt be good at all. LOL Cailah tried to bat at him even if he just walks by her or tried to smell her...... ok so i need to let loose and give it a shot then...i am scared LOL
Letting them out in the living room sounds like a good plan. Maybe you could put Calvin on a leash at first just to make it a little safer if you are worried. It gets kind of scarey at first cause you dont know whats going to happen. Just keep a close eye on all of them and be ready to intervene in case something does happen. It took Sydney about 4 days to loose intrest in my new cats, so time may be what they need.
Calvin tried to play with them by sitting on them LOL but he usually doesnt go near Cailah, only katie. But Katie is VERy tollerant. I will give it a shot! Thanks!
I can see it now. The dog wearing industrial protective goggles, playing with the cats. Actually, I would be too scared of the dog losing an eye, too. Sounds like the cat is baiting him, and with that, and not abject fear-and the dog cornering a scared cat, I think you are OK. I agree with Sydney.
