Also, this is strange to me... you would think you would comfort a dog when he/she is scared, but the experts say not to... this excerpt is in regard to thunder, but fireworks would be the same:

When it comes to acting up during a storm (or being crated), it is EXTREMELY important to understand that "comforting" a dog when he/she is being fearful and nutty only makes that behavior MUCH much worse. A dog perceives "comfort" as "praise" and it reinforces the behaviors. The dog thinks you WANT him/her to act that way. The proper way to deal with a dog's fear is to act like NOTHING unusual is wrong. Go about your business as usual and, if necessary, crate the dog in the same room where you are and remind him/her to "be quiet" and "lie down."  Going about your business as usual and laughing off a storm (or other fears) is the best thing to do around the dog.

No. I was on the sidewalk last night and could almost smell the sulfer from the fireworks. Most years it is right on me, before I know it. This year I have a sense of anticipation...
I see now it is on Monday, my day off. So PARTY is in order...Gotta rake up some company for that puppy this year.

Oh, I feed the dogs and lock them in the house when I leave. They have been conditioned to gunfire, so it rolls right off them...I get a few perked ears...

Fireworks are illegal here. If you get caught with them in the county you get a big fine. But you have to get caught first. But Sheppard Air Force Base usually have a huge forework thing there but this year they aren't having one. So I don't know what we will do this year. And Oscar isn't bothered by them.

I have no clue how my dogs are with fireworks. I don't think we've ever had them around fireworks before. Maybe we'll take them over to the lakes for the firework display this year, or maybe to the Clay County fairgrounds. They always have a good fireworks display. Haven't been over to Clay County one for a long time but that's the one we always went to when I was growing up. They are illegal here too, if you have them, you also get a fine. But go right across the state line, to Sioux Falls, SD, then all you see along the highway is fireworks stands. It's funny. People always go there and get them and light them at their houses. Not a good idea in town, I don't think, but if it's on a farm or out in the country, I see no harm in it, as long as they don't get caught, lol!!

I have lit fireworks off in Flandreau, SD. At my grandma's house. They are right next to Sioux Falls. We were surprized at how big the fireworks were there. They are not legal here in Arcadia, or Monrovia CA, either. They are legal in Azusa. We visit friends that live there on the 4th.

That is extremely strange to me as well. We just had a big thunderstorm here today, and Dook runs under my legs and just shakes whenever there's a big boom. I could never do anything but comfort him I think it's a silly notion, actually. He'd be scared poopless whether I 'praised' him for being scared or not. Only thing that would change is he wouldn't feel safe or loved! Eh, I'm not one for all the training mumbo jumbo for the most part, anyways.

The happy part about the storm was afterwards, when I let the pups lose, and they splashed in the puddles and dug in the mud in the area that was SUPPOSED to be my flower garden ... I'm too dang lazy to plant flowers, though. heh. (It's nice to be back, btw, so hello everyone Finals are over, and work stress has been cut in half. I have time to live again! And by live I mean play on the internet every once in awhile, lol!)
