So I was cruising Petfinder.com and looking at the dobermans listed for my area. I found this beautiful 1 year old female named Lexy at the Humane Society about 1/2 hour from where I live. So I sent an email to DRON (Doberman Rescue of Nebraska) and asked Alice if they got dogs from shelters to be released into rescue. She said yes they do and asked me to check in on it. I sent the hs an email, stating that I'm with DRON and we are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and we saw her page on petfinder and would like to know more about her and if they'd consider releasing her into rescue. This is what I got back from the lady at the HS:
I had Lexie spayed yesterday. She is an excellent dog, great with kids, great with other dogs, and I don't know about cats. She will adopt and we will do our best to screen for a good home. Thank you for your interest and for your concern. I have filed your email for future reference in event I need help placing a Doberman.
Kate Whitrock Executive Director Humane Society of Northwest Iowa
WTF??? They'd rather see her sit and rot in a kennel, waiting for her forever home than in a foster home, waiting for it?? I just don't get it!! Here's what I said back:
Thank you so much for the speedy reply!! I'm sure you will find Lexie a great home. Of that, I have no doubt. I was just wondering if it may be better for her to be in a foster home, while awaiting her forever home. I'm sure you will have no problems placing her, she sounds VERY desirable. Wouldn't mind taking her in, myself.....But thank you for considering it. I forwarded your email to Alice Erftmier, from DRON, just so she knows. Thank you for taking the time to read my emails, I know you are a very busy person, with a lot on your plate at the Humane Society. Thanks again
I then proceeded to send the same email to Alice and this is what she sent me, I think she was thinking she sent it to the HS maybe:
Thank you Kate, for letting our reps in Estherville IA know that Lexie is spayed and will get a good home. We do all the adoptions for Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota with Doberman Rescue of NE, Inc. We are located in Omaha and are pleased that we have such wonderful reps like these to assist us. We have people all over Iowa who help us with home visits and adoptions.
We adopt our Dobermans to homes with fenced yards. The Dobes we adopt out must live in the home as part of the family and not in a dog house or a kennel. Their skin coats are not made for the extreme weather in the upper midwest and they suffer terribly in the winter in the cold. Likewise in the summer in the heat.
If you feel that you would rather turn Lexie over to us for adoption, we would be happy to take her and place her in a good, loving home. We monitor the Dobermans we place for the entire life of the dog. If, down the road, the adoptive family can no longer keep the dog, the adoption agreement stipulates the dog must be returned to us and not handed over to a shelter or anyone else. Our dogs are all placed with shots current, spayed/neutered, and microchipped.

Sorry I don't know what to say only that I feel she would be better in a foster home. I know here when there is even a lab at the humane socity he/she goes to the lab rescue. Same with Danes.
Hopefully though Lexy will get adopted to a great family soon.
Exactly, she would be way better off in a warm home being fostered. Plus they would have more room at the Inn so to speak. To bring in a new dog. Very frustrating.
That's why I just don't get it!! Who would rather see a dog sitting in a kennel, even for a week, than to see it in a foster home?? Stupid people!!! I guess I've never really liked the HS here. They're always......I don't know.........it just seems as though they want to keep her there because they'll get the adoption money or something. I guess I could tell them that we'd be happy to give them the adoption money, if only to have her in rescue then......I don't know. I hate emailing Alice all the time, I know she's got it hard enough, she's (i think) in her 70s and has 4 dobes right now!!! And she's the one that does the paper work and answers ALL the emails and what not, so I really hate to bother her like that. She's got enough on her plate right now, but I can't help but wonder if she wouldn't be willing to do that, pay the adoption fee for her??
IMO, i would adopt her and then place her. If you or the rescue lady pay the adoption fee, you'll get that back if either of you find her a home right? Just my opinion.
Mollie..im sorry that your frustrated with that whole system...I have been out of rescueing for a few years now and i dont regret doing it one minute..i love the act of placing a good well deserving dog in an approiate home..dont get me wrong..just the hoops you have to jump in order to do things..its ok for me to tromp through the sleet, mudd , snow to rescue a God awful abuse or neglected dog and expose my pets to God nos what..share my food, house accomidations time energy and love when it suits them..but when the table is turned they can be outright rediculious..ive saved and relinguished too many dogs to name over the 25 plus years I have done this...and it isnt easy...its a racket to many places any more...the money is just too good to resist..and i cant tell who to trust any more..I say dont take it persoanl..my own shelter is nortorious for spiriting off any purebreds and they never hit the adoption floor..when rescues are suposted to get them after the 4 days they are on the adoption floor..not first dibs..the only thing you can get in my county is the perverbial black dog..unknow decent...but lab is in there some where..its crazy...then peopel wonder why they dont even go to the shelters to look..if you can get in with the squrly hours they post but never seem to keep...then they dont have anything..but if they contact you they expect you to make room in yopur house for a new one in a hour..or else ...doom and gloom will happen...I got so darn burned out with all the stuff..seeing abuse and neglrst take it out of you...and the only reward is seeing a good dog going to a wonderful family...but..one can never be too sure..migh only appear to be wonderfulll...we all know the standard answwers to put on questionares...pretty sad state of affairs...well...im bumbing myself oput..so ill stop...i just wanted to let you know not to take this thing personal...take care...
This may not be the case where you live, but if it were here, I would guess...They have done the work, and now they want their money. Dog pounds around here charge good money for an adoption, I doubt they want to lose that to someone else. Also, the dog pounds hereabouts have their own screening and adoption programs and doubtless don't trust many rescues that are often animal collectors or brokers, not that the people that you are associated with are...just that may be how they are thinking...
Thanks Huron. I just am totally apalled by the fact that they'd rather have her in the HS than in a breed specific rescue!! Just the fact that DRON does a home visit would be enough for me to let her go to rescue, if I was a volunteer at the HS!! I just don't get it!! I know some ppl have to lie to the HS to get their dogs, because I know that some of these people, I wouldn't adopt a dog out to them if they paid me $1000 for it!!! Just p*sses me off!! Am actually getting angrier by the minute here, so I think I should stop reading this for a while, lol. BTW, Brad and I would love to have the opportunity to foster this dog. I need a doberman while he's in basic for 9 weeks. I refuse to let him go, if I don't have my big protective dobe!! lol
OK, I can understand all of that, Kitty, but I really don't think they have to worry about brokers and collectors and what not, going into rescue. This is a VERY small area, and it seems as though everybody knows everybody, so they usually know who not to adopt to. BUT, DRON is a credible rescue, with a website and all sorts of contact info on there. Plus, success stories and newsletters and an adoption form, and a home visit, upon completion of the adoption form. I'd just think that they'd rather see her in rescue. It's very frustrating to me!! I've emailed Alice at DRON, asking her if we could "adopt" her or just give them the money in exchange for the dog going into rescue:
I was wondering if maybe we could adopt Lexy and then put her into rescue?? Maybe they just don't want to lose the money that they'll get for her adoption fee?? I think Brad and I would be willing to foster her. I don't know, just a thought. I have posted a thread on a discussion forum about this. I'm rather upset that they'd rather see the dog in a kennel, waiting for her forever home, than to see her in a comfy, warm foster home, waiting for her forever home. It's just very puzzling to me. Seems that they don't have the animal's best interests in mind at all, but rather their own. Tell me if I'm wrong for thinking this way, but it's very frustrating to me. Maybe we could donate the money to them for her rescue?? I guess not really "adopt" her, but at least put her in a foster home!! Ugghh!!! Tell me what you think, please. I'm sorry I'm always buggin ya about something, I know you have a whole lot going on right now, with 4 dobes at home and doing the adoption stuff.
I don't know what else to do!! I would looooovvveeee to foster this dog!! And possibly adopt her. Since DRON serves all of Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, and Kansas, why wouldn't they rather see her in there?? Alice has also told me of a dog they adopted to someone in Idaho!!! So, that said, I still just don't get it!! LOL Still seems to me that the HS is only keeping her for the money- they say on their site that adoption fees for dogs are $85, and can vary depending on age/breed of dog. They're asking $150 for her!! That, to me, is more than varying, not that I'd have any problem paying $150 for a nice young dobe, but geesh!! Varying to me is like a $20-$40 difference, not $65. ARRGGHH!! Ok, I'm done now!! LOL
Ok I will try this again LOL Mollie... We have a place in Milford about 2 blocks from this very shelter. I try and stop in there to check out the animals occasionally. Anyway one day I walked over about a 1/2 hour before they closed and the lady would not let me in as she said they were closing and she didn't have time for me to look ???? They are kinda different over there and not the friendliest .... sorry to say. I have a hard time with the conditions some of the shelters have and I totally agree that this dog would be in a much better place in a rescue home!!! good luck with your efforts
Caspers Jubilee!!!! Is that reallly you?? WELCOME!!! Thanks for understanding, btw. Great to see a fellow Iowan here, from the same area!!! I'm ecstatic now!! w00t
LOL Mollie... YES it is me Caspers Jubilee!! How sweet of you to remember me :0)
I just had to sign up and post on this one .....as this VERY shelter has rubbed me the wrong one more than once. It makes no sense why they would be happy to let a dog go to a good rescue home I think it is kinda greedy of them
Hey, check your pm...i sent you one. was just wondering where exactly do you live.....the pm box is in the top right on your screen, where it says your name, under it, it should say "you have 1 new messages, click here". just to give you a heads up on the pm box thingy, it's usually pretty confusing to those that are new to this site.
Thanks for the heads up.... learning the in's and outs of a new forum can be a challange LOL I keep popping in and out when trying to post ??? Oh and got the PM thanks and right back at ya "wink" casper
OK, these were the last emails I got from Alice and the ones I sent back to her. It really doesn't sound like they want to give her to rescue.
IF the dog doesn't get adopted out, maybe we can get her. Can you foster her?
thanks Alice
Believe we can forget about getting this dog.
Alice
If you want Lexy and feel that she would work fine in your home, then you can make arrangements for her to go to your home. We will be happy to give you a recommendation.
You will have to contact the shelter and see if they would adopt her out to you. (Are you ready for another Dobie?) Then we can reimburse you for the expense of adopting her. We do owe you a dog. I do not know if the shelter would let he come to us IF you did not want to keep her all the time. Some adoption contract are very rigid in their rules
Alice
Probably could foster her. I'll have to do some sweet-talkin to Brad though, lol ;) He's thinking of going into the Nat'l Guard, so he'd be gone for 9 weeks down in Ft. Sill, OK, so I want a doberman, if not a protective one, one that will scare off anyone thinking of messing with me while he's gone. This house is just too large to be alone with Mollie and Chopper for that long without some sort of scare tactic, you know?? I would be delighted to foster her, however, we are going to be caring for our friends' female Great Dane and male English Mastiff for a week, in August, I think. So I'll really have to sweet talk him!! LOL. I'm sure he won't mind fostering her. That'll just get us ready to adopt, should we so choose
Yeah, it doesn't sound like they want her going into rescue, which I'm still finding it hard to understand. I know of other people that have thought their ways of doing things were somewhat.......unorthodox?? I think that's the word. Most other shelters would be delighted to have a rescue come and get some of their dogs from them. It's not like we have a shortage of backyard breeders and uneducated adopters around here, sad but true. I think they're just greedy with the money they'd get for her. I don't know. I do know of people having probs adopting from there though. They say their price for dogs is $85 and varies with age and breed of dog. Lexy is 1 year old and they are asking $150 for her. I think that's a bit more than a LITTLE VARIANCE, not that it's too much, but still. She is a very desirable dog, and I hope she gets a good home. I dont' know if Brad would allow it, adopting her. I'd rather just adopt from you guys because I know you actually WORK with the people that adopt from you. Pray that she gets a great home!!
