appendicular osteosarcoma found in our dog

One of my show dogs was diagnosed with this today. We are devastated.  It has already progressed to the point that they may have to amputate.  We don't know whether to have the dog put down or go on with the surgery.

I was just hoping that someone may have went through this and wanted to ask how you handled it?  Our Blue Tick is 3 years old. He has alot of life to live, but can he really live a quality life with an amputation?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Ah - I would say go for an amputation before putting anything down of course!!!  Plenty of dogs and cats  live good happy lives as amputies- but sorry anyways!

i found a few sites that might be helpful . i have never heard of this before so i couldnt be of much help other than giving you these links. there are options and there is hope. and i agree with lovinoeb that dogs adjust well and fast to losing a limb and can live normal lives . i will say a prayer for your family that things turn out well for your beloved pet.

Sorry to hear about your furpal's problem!

I have seen many dogs over the years who had lost a leg & they have had no problem adjusting and living full & happy lives.  I even remember as a teenager our neighbor had a white shepherd who had lost one back leg & if you watched that dog you would never believe that he was without one - he could move just as steady & sure and fast as he did when he had all 4 limbs.

I have seen a couple dogs with three legs that play harder and run faster than some lazy dogs with four legs. It also seems like they are REALLY happy for some reason. Like they know they were sick or something and are happy to be alive. In particular, I guess, I am talking about my girlfriends dog when I was young. He was so playful and full of life. He wore us out!

I know this will be a hard time for you. But things always work out somehow.  I would give him a chance, he is so young yet.
