Sydney does this thing around the other dogs and im wondering if it is dominance or submission. If Lana is laying down, Syd will walk over and stand over her, if lana moves over a little syd moves with her, standing, and staying over Lana. She just did it now to the cat, first time i saw her do that and then they started playing.Does anyone elses dog do this?
When she is standing over them, her back end is over thier head, usually.
It sounds sort of dominant to me, or your dog is just silly. Is this the one that humps? But usually when a dog stand over another its dominant behavior.
thanks puttin. Syd is not the dog that humps, infact i have never seen her hump.You are probly right that it is dominance cause she seems dominant in other ways too sometimes.
I have also heard that that could be a dominance thing. You can really tell if she doesn't let the other dogs get her on the ground. Watch her when she plays, and see if she is ever the one on her back with the other dog playing over her. If she lets other dogs do that, then when she stands over them she could just be acting silly, but if she is never the one laying on the floor (especially on her back) that it probably means she is higher up in the pack order than the other dogs.

Yep, hunter's right. Laying on their back during play or a confrontation shows they are the less dominate one. Mine are funny. My JRT (Milo) is the total dominate one over my Finnish spitz (Hayley). He has to be fed first because he will steal hers and if Hayley has a bone, Milo will run up to her, growl a little and steal it and then take it over to his bone. He then lays on her bone and chews his............lol If she comes to take it back, he growls at her. So what does she do? She waits until he gets up to get a drink or follow someone around and then she runs up and steals hers back............lol They have done this for 9 years! Milo is also mr. jealous and if we are petting Hayley or the cats, he runs up to us and pushes his way into our lap and growls at the offending pet........lol Gotta love him.
Yes that is correct the laying on the back is a sign of submission. It sounds to me though since your dog is doing this with the cat as well and the WAY your dog is posturing itself that it is a signal for play. Don't worry too much unless you hear one growl or see one with their teeth showing. My dobies do this all the time to eachother.

Syd is actually the one who is on her back the most during play. All my dogs do it, but Syd is usually the one always on the ground. Maybe she is being silly...lol.
