bigotry is still prevelant in our society. people that think its not are misinformed. it is a learned behaviour passed down from parents to their children. its not as bad as it was years ago, but it is still a problem in our society. we as parents need to instill in our children morals and values. and to be respectful of ALL cultures. when i hear young children making biggoted remarks towards another race. i dont hold them responsible. they are young and naive and obviously not been taught respect by their parents. children pick up what they hear from adults. when they hear negative comments on a regular basis, it isnt long before it becomes the norm for them.and they feel its okay for them to do and say whatever because the parents do.
i have dealt with many stares and whispering when i go shopping with my grandsons. my daughter-in-law is black. kimani's biological dad is black.my son met erica when kimani was four and has raised him as his own. kimani is very dark complected.he is 7 years old. baby jaymes is my son and erica's child .he is mixed.he is 18 months old.she brought them up from california so that quinn and i could have them for the summer. we went to walmart yesterday and i could not believe the stares we got from people. so much ignorance. even from the children.
my daughter kayla's boyfriend is black.she has dealt with the biggotry from piers at school. why are we teaching our kids hatred and biggotry and sending them out into the world with such negatives views. it has too stop somewhere. we can stop it now with our kids. by teaching them morals and values and to be respectful of others ,regardless of race or religous beliefs.
And why do people stare at children and adults with Down's Syndrome? That is so rude. Staring is rude. Somebody would get their feelings hurt and it would not be me. Why is it any body's business who your children date? I just don't get everyone's obsession with what other people are doing. People need to just learn how to mind their own business and concern themselves with their own households and not be so concerned about what other adults are doing? If it isn't hurting you, hurting a child or hurting an animal...what is it to you? Who cares? I feel absolutely nothing when I see people of different cultures in relationships.
believe me we have not only dealt with stares but rude comments as well. last summer we had a picnic at a family park. kayla and cory had been walking around holding hands. when they went down to the water to swim, we had a lady approach and ask us if kayla was our daughter. we said yes. then she asked why we allowed her to hold hands in public and especially with a "colored boy" ! i am usually quick witted ,but this time i was speechless. quinn came to the rescue though. god i love him. lol . he asked her if she saw the signs that were posted around the park. she said "no". so he said " it says all dogs must be kept on a leash, you must have slipped out of your collar" !! i hoped it taught that nosey biddy to mind her own business !! lol
What a gorgeous family Dusty! You must be so proud
I'm sorry those things happened to you I feel like I live a sheltered life or something, because where I live I NEVER see bigotry at all. The only thing I really see that Coloradoans do in a mean way is drive, lol.

thank you hunternellasmom ! i am very pround of all of my children and grandchildren. i have learn to ignore the rude ones. it just irks me when they are openly rude in front of my grandkids. kimanai is 7 and he doesnt understand why some people stare. i havent really sat him down yet and talked about it with him. i will wait until erica comes back in september to get them and sit down with all of them together. he,s a very bright kid and gets along well with everyone. hopefully he will not lose anything through other peoples ignorance.
Dusty, from their faces I can see that they have a strong enough protection against negative thoughts. You have given them their self. Self has no color. They are individuals. They are intelligent people that live on this planet, and CANNOT be put down by anyone, regardless of an oppressor's color, they are superior, because they have confidence, personality, and drive. They don't need to blame anyone's color or race for their shortcomings. Gosh, did you see Will and Jada on Monday night? Tell me they have a problem with the color they were born to....
I totally agree the same thing happens to me when I'm with my friend and her mother adn my mother. My friend is mix (black and white) and it makes it worse that her mother is blind. Ihate the way people star and I'm always tempted to yell at them " What the H*ll are you looking at?" But that would be basiclly sinking to there level.
what really bugs me is when people stare also ~ i have been brought up to treat others as equals i dont care if a black person marries a white person or any other different races marry or they have mixed race kids~ racism is one of my huge hatreds in the world... It really gets my goat when people poke fun at the obese people also .

LOL!
You don't get it. We understand.
Read some bios about Will and Jada. They both had a very difficult time breaking into Hollywood Kitty's Mom and it wasn't because they were poor performers. Step out of your box. I am begging you.
[Ignores Tyson] I agree Twink. I think that poking fun at people for their weight, or appearance is mean. I see a lot of it where I work. Armenians are amazing how they treat people. Mexicans don't mean it in a bad way, but they always call people names according to body shape. They refer to people with a big gut as panzon, gordo, and on the other hand skinny is flaca, slight is bacallo, etc. A lot of itas and otos there, too. It is just how they are. One of my Mexican gf's called one of her 3 little boys gordo, instead of his name. I was rather appalled by that, but in many cultures they just call it as they see it You know, as far as looking at people goes, that may or may not be because they dislike the color of your skin. Would you know the difference if someone was staring at you because they admired your color, or the way you look? Or do you just ASSUME that people looking at you do not like the way you look? The love of my life, my Iranian lover of the past 25+ years, is pretty much black if he gets any sun at all. I am particuliarly attracted to dark complected people. Do you suppose when I am admiring the tone of their skin, they are thinking those vile racist thoughts? That would be sad, but it makes you think. I think that self confidence is real important. I guess in a way I am glad I work in as cosmopolitan a place as I do. I went to the SF valley once, in a McDonald's, getting a tea, I noticed that everyone around me was white and blond. At a nearby pet store, I noticed the same thing. I was mystified...Then, at the restuarant, I talked to some customers that were from that area, they said they had experienced the same sort of wonder that there were so many people of color in the Pasadena area. I guess a lot of it is where you come from. It is very color mixed around here where I live. Racism exists, but most people are bright enough around here to see the futility of it. Racial comments around here stand out and are not tolerated very well. I must say when travelling when I was younger, I noticed some waaay different attitudes in other parts of the country. Being the only American working in an Arabic bar, also the largest, busiest restuarant in this area, usually I AM the one being discriminated against, so I can say I do know what some people go through. I have been a target at work for years. It is amazing what some people say right in front of you when they speak another language. Why it is not rude to insult someone, just because you are not doing it in English, is beyond me. I tell you it is quite an experience working in a multi cultural enviornment, and not always a pleasant one...
A discussion of immigration has turned its predictable and ugly head toward racism as usual. People like Will and Jada P. Smith and other high profile Afro-Americans will continue with the subliminal messages of oppression inflicted on them and all Afro-Americans by "White America." Instead of getting your inspirations from the likes of Will and Jada, or Michael Jorden, or 50 Cent, look to some of whom I think are some of the most inspirational, spiritual, and absolute greatest people of all time.

"There is a class of colored people who make business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the negro race before the public. Some of these people do not want the negro to loose his grievances, because they do not want to loose their jobs. There is a certain class of race-problem solvers who don't want the patient to get well."

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, "Who am I to be Brilliant, Gorgeous, Talented and Fabulous?" Who are you NOT to be. You are a child of the Universe. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlighted about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We were born to make manifest the Glory of the Universe that is within us. It's not just in some of us; It's in everyone. As we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fears, our presence automatically liberates others."
Pretty babies Dusty! Wanted to add my 2 cents! My son is Deaf, and he wears a cochlear implant! Some deaf people can speak very well, and some not! Well my son can say a few words pretty clearly, but most of the time he just sounds like hes shouting, and sometimes he sounds like a goose! Deaf people are also extra animated, and so sometimes-we get some stares and looks! But he also gets lots of compliments on how CUTE he is! And what a great signer he is! I think when people see something different, its just human nature to look! Most times it dosnt bother us-sometimes I have to say something though!!!!
Pit pat, I like all those people also, but mostly I studied their writings when I was a kid.
Will was on tv when I was doing laundry Tuesday, he made some real inspirational speaking, and remains the funniest person, as well as one of the sexiest... Jada is absolutely beautiful, but I really thought he could get her to lap dance[she's way too classy, but he got one when he got home, I betcha big time] I missed whether Beyonce actually did one[Will's routine said she did] Beyonce is an incredible dancer, so I wished I had seen her. I was not talking about historical figures. I think that young people do look up to contemporary folk. I am glad to see they have some drug free and intelligent examples to follow.

"Drug free and intelligent". Will someone get this _! PLEASE!
Ok last time you made a remark that could be taken one of two different ways I asked you what you meant and you never replied. Now I am asking you again if you don’t want to elaborate you deserve what you get!
What the heck is the drug free and intelligent comment supposed to mean?

Are you implying that all blacks do drugs and are not intelligent? Now all your stereotypical posts are starting to make sense. You are a racist. Admit it. And if that's not a racist stab, then Adolf Hitler is a kind hearted person.

I guess I am just way out of the loop here. I didn't see that as racist at all. I saw it as a positive comment aimed at all hollywood 'examples'. To me it was saying that 'contemporary folk' (meaning everyone) are what our young people look up to. The Smiths were just a great example of how 'contemporary folk' should be.
Maybe its because I try to look for positive in things. Lets also keep in mind that we are typing here.....can't understand the tone of voice. Before we accuse, lets question how something was meant and give the person a chance to respond.I have spoken to Kitty privately many times. She is as far from as a racist as they come. I really don't think she meant that they way some of you took it. JMO.
