Hey all, it's been awhile since I posted here. Things have been kinda crazy the last several weeks. Went to Dallas in mid-June for the Chinese Crested specialty show, met up with about 16 girls from a crestie chat group and to make a long story short....a great time was had by all and it will now be an annual event. Brought back 4 rescue Cresties with me from Dallas, then my sis brought one with her from Houston the following Saturday...had 9 dogs in the house that nite - talk about a total zoo. Moved 4 of the 5 rescues to the other side of St. Louis the next day, where they are now all in their foster homes in Indiana & Ohio.
Now for Lil Ricky's saga. As some of you may or may not be aware, Lil Ricky is a very special little guy. He's a former puppymill dog that has some serious vision impairment, orthopedic & neurological deficits. We adopetd him after finding out about all his problems because we just couldn't bear the thought of him going anywhere else & them not being able to deal with all his littlel quirks & issues. Last nite Lil Ricky had a severe seizure and to my knowledge this is his first. I heard this awful noise in the other room and when I went to see what it was, there was Ricky laying on the floor entire body convulsing, legs as stiff as a board, peeing & pooping himself and frothing at the mouth, lips curled back like he was going to bite (although I don't think he could have even if he wanted to) and Bandit hovering right over him. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life. If it hadn't been for my witnessing Gypsy's (one of the 5 rescue dogs I brought back from Dallas with me) small seizure a couple of weeks ago, I'm not sure I would have recognized the symptoms immediately. The whole thing felt like it lasted 3 days, but in reality I think it was only probably a bout 90 seconds for the worst of it to pass. I continued to cradle him next to me until he began to relax his muscles and start look around. Shortly thereafter he was resting comfortably in his bed, but was absolutely exhausted and still a bit confused (but he's always a bit confused LOL). I gave him some Nutrical & Gatorade and shortly after that he got out of the bed and went to get a big drink of water.
Thankfully, Ricky slept quietly all nite long right by my side and has been his happy little self all day. I called the vet first thing this a.m. and he said unless Ricky had another one today before they close at noon, there's really nothing they can do for him today. I am to start keeping a log of when he has them, the duration, the symptoms exhibited and so on and we'll take it from there (hopefully, there won't be another one). He, of course, said that if he has another one after hours to call him immediately and he'll meet me at the clinic...biggest problem is he is a 40 min. drive from me. I went out today to go buy another baby gate so when we're not home he’ll be separated from the others in the kitchen but still have access to his doggy door (the others won't but that's okay they'd rather lay on the sofa anyway…and Lord knows Chancey doesn't use it to go out to pee). Ricky spends the majority of his days laying outside on the deck going back and forth from his bed in the sun to his bed in the shade .
I normally handle crises very well when they're happening and then fall apart after it's all over, but I sure didn't handle last nite too well. I was so scared he was going to die right in my arms and there was nothing I could for him. Things are pretty much back on an even keel now, but I'll be watching the lil guy like a hawk for awhile.
Any of you with experience dealing with seizures, I'd love to hear from you.
wow! I know how you feel that is the worst thing to deal with with animals. We have rescued pups with head injuries and they had many a seizure it is a nightmare!

About a year ago, while I was home alone with the the dogs, Chloe started acting quite unusual for herself. She because extremely "velcro" and within 15 minutes or so she went into a grand mal seizure. I'll tell you it scared the daylights out of me. All I could do was get on the floor with her & try to hold her steady until it passed. As you said, while it is happening it seemed to go on forever & ever when in reality is was actually a short period of time. Once she was over it and finally able to again stand & walk I brought her to the emergency clinic. One the girls who was working there that weekend works at our regular vet's office during the week & is quite familiar with Chloe. Even tho over an hr had passed since the onset of the seizure she was still not acting like herself. The vet checked her over & there was no obvious reason for the seizure. Monday I brought her to our own vet and again there was no glaring reason that he could see.
He suggested that I keep track of future episodes but to rush her back immediately if she had a long-lasting seizure or started with cluster seizures. Luckily she hasn't had another one.
I do have a friend with a little chi who suffered with seizures on a regular basis. She has been on phenobarbital for over a year now & they have been under control. I have heard of others who a diet change seemed to eliminate them.
I will keep Ricky in my prayers that he doesn't continue to have them.
Thanks Denise. Obviously, I'm now trying to learn as much as I can about seizures/epilepsy and have read some things today about diet. There's a lot to take in so I'm not going to make any changes until I feel I have a better handle on all the information.
I did join a K9 epilepsy group today so I can bounce questions off others who have much more experience dealing with these things....I don't know where I'd be without the internet and all the fabulous people out there willing to spend their time helping others learn to deal, cope, etc.!!!
When I brought my Pug Holly home, I thought she was just the best cuddler ever! The most easy going pupy I had ever seen! She was super good at the housetraining thing too! I noticed she didnt eat much, and one day she was acting sorta like she had hiccups. They came and went and all of the sudden she got stiff as a board {while cuddling up to me on my lap}. I was SO FREAKED out, I jumped away from her, and my BF started yelling HOllY!! And trying to shake her head{gently} and tapping her cheeks! It was so scary!! I brought her in the next day when she had another episode! The vet told me, yes it was seisures and she ran a TON of tests which came back she has a Liver Shunt! Poor baby! I know its tough to see that! Its awful, and you want to make it stop, and you cant! But staying calm {if you can!} is good! I think thats great you got on that support group! Good luck to you!!! Your great for adopting him! You are right! When a dog has any "issues", its really hard to find them a permanent home! I know from experience-they will get bounced around, home to home!! Good Luck! You are a little angel for keeping him!!
Why? I feed Wellness Simple Solutions (venison/rice). If Nutro Ultra has any chicken products in it I cannot feed it as I have another dog with IBS and he cannot tolerate chicken.
It is real digestible and has acidophilus in it. But it does have chicken. I found it to be superior, and simple, not too rich. I give it to my growing pups and lactating dams. Here's ingredients. http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncup.asp
You are right that there could be a food connection.
Thought I'd give y'all an update on Lil Ricky. Sadly, he had another grand mal seizure last nite so off to the vet we went today. I took along my journal of his seizures & my list of symptoms he's exhibited periodically and daily. We did a blood work up (Ricky pooped on Dr. Becker when they stuck him with needle…he just chuckled and said well at least I know he has nice firm stools). All his blood work came back absolutely normal (excellent in fact) and he saw no reason to go forward with any additional liver function tests. Because Ricky has exhibited so many seizure symptoms for months now that I didn't recognize, Doc believed it best to just go ahead and started him on Phenobarb. I am giving him one 16.2mg/day and if I believe it is drugging him up too much I can cut it back to 1/2. We're going to stay on this level for 3 weeks & then we'll talk about how Ricky's doing on it and cut the dosage back by 1/2 for another 3 weeks, and then take it from there.
We spoke about nutrition issues and he agreed that starting him on the NB fish/sweet potato was a good idea and, should I so chose, he recommends raw feeding (my previous vet was dead set against the BARF diet and basically called me an idiot for even reading about it (hence, one of the reasons why she's now my ex-vet) and indicated that it may not only help Ricky, but Bandit's tummy issues as well. Doc said that while he does not feed raw, he's seen & heard about too many clients/patients that have a 100% turn around on everything from allergies, to IBS, to crystals in the urine, etc. and he can't ignore the results. So, I'm going to start to some research into it. I have found a rep for Oma's Pride here locally that has offered to give me a trial size whenever I'm ready.
So, everyone please continue your good thoughts & prayers that we're able to eliminate or, at least, diminish Ricky's seizure activity with the use of the PB.
