hi in other thread i posted pics of Harvey and comments were made on his weight ..
( im not offended with the comments as i know he is pretty thin looking but im having a hard time getting weight onto him and its really starting to upset me he is regularily wormed and in good health apart form the weight issue)
I have heard silk balls/silky balls mentioned and have heard they are great at adding weight onto dogs..
Harvey loves eating meat and i am getting to the point where i am considering feeding him raw..
Whats your advice on The silk ball thing and are they good at adding weight and does anyone know the recipe? I would like to feed them along with his dry food .. or does anyone know of anything else that can add to his weight..
I cant feed him puppy food as i cant find an hypoallergenic one in the u.k even though its higher in protein ... it seems you have quite a large choice of foods in the u.s but there is hardly much choice here in the u.k
Woops they are not silk balls Just remembered they are called SATIN BALLS god im stupid! edited title so i dont look like im totally loopy! well once i remebered i found the recipe .. anyone translate some of the ingredients into u.k english lol ...
10 pounds of cheap hamburger meat,
1 large box of total cereal
1 large box of oatmeal,
1 jar of wheargerm (where the heck do i get that lol)
Do you have Total cereal in the UK?? If not, any kind of cereal that's supposed to be healthy (Total is like Corn flakes or Wheaties, but healthier with more vitamins and minerals). I'm sure that would work. Wheat germ, I think you could get at the store in the baking department?? Not sure about that. Unsulphured molasses................hhhmmmmmm.................I have no clue. Someone else could prolly help though.

Yeah we have cornflakes .. not sure if they have added vitamins though .. but now i know what im looking for i can check it out ..
RE: wheatgerm ~ is that like yeast that you put in bread? is that what you mean?
lol thanks for helping though .. hopefully someone else will add
No don't use corn flakes. Corn is a high allergen for dogs. Yeast is not the same as wheat germ. Your best bet would be to go to a health food store. Do you have them there. That is where you can get wheat germ and the unsulfered mollassas. Olive oil would be a great substitute for the vegetable oil. Its great for the heart and skin.
Instead of corn flakes, look for any cereal that has whole grains, wheat, nuts that sort of thing. Wheaties is made moslty of wheat, so you could just look for something simliar.
I think your dog looks good. Dobes are not supposed to be fat. But if you think so. You could try adding in some cottage cheese too.

yeah we have health food stores .. they stock everything so im sure i'll get it there.
We have also got Shreddies which i think are like your wheaties and they have no harmfull chemical added. I wanted to use olive oil as i never use veg oil so glad he can have it also ..
I'm not gonna go crazy pileing the weight on as i know dobies arent supposed to be fat .. he had got good bone structure .. but he is growing so fast and so energetic that his weight can keep up so i wanted to use silk balls in moderation just whilst he is growing .. and with the heat at the moment it really puts him of his food and he hasnt got extra weight to loose ..so i know this will be too tempting for him to leave ..
Thanks alot for the advice ..looks like a trip to the health food store tommorow
How old is Harvey? I know young growing dogs often go thru a gangly stringy stage just because of fast growth. He may just even out on his own. But treats are usually never turned down, you can tone it down when needed.
Hes a year old .. usually it takes them till 2 years to get to their full adult weight but he had an awfull start in life and was really neglected and came to us skin and bone .. i wanted to give him them to give him a boost as he is a rel poor eater at the best of times.
As long as the worms are gone [sounds like you did a few wormings] he should put weight on by himself. The puppy food is higher in protein, and I think calories. Harvey has a glow of health about him so I would not go changing his diet much, could lead to other problems. I thought maybe puppy bisquits would be a good fatten upper, in addition to his regular feed. Knowing nothing about where you are I found this, on one of the foods I favor. http://www.nutroproducts.com/unitedkingdom.asp
thats what i'm hoping .. i just keep a close eye on him as always .. hopefully in a years time he will have grown out of that awkward looking stage ..hopefully with dustys recipes the few extra treats will help ..
