Huskys

Does anyone here own a Husky or use to own one? If so can anyone tell me about them from personal experiance, are they hard to train, do they get along with other dogs, etc....I'm looking for a dog for my sister, and i would just like to know how other people enjoyed thier huskys. I might go look at one today, a 8 week old male. Any helpful information would be highly appreciated, thanks

Kittys Mom beat me to it!

This is one breed that generally speaking is not trainable off-lead.  Once they are loose they have a strong tendency to just start running, and running and running,.........   They can go for miles before they even start to get winded.  They do have fantastic stamina.  They can be somewhat of couch potatoes inside as long as they get plenty of outdoor exercise.  While the cold weather doesn't tend to bother them, heat does hit them.  Most are not big barkers but that is not to say that they don't do alot of "talking".  As with the majority of dogs as long as they are socialized well as pups they tend to get along with other dogs.

My daughter had both an Alaskan Malmute and a Siberian Husky.  Both were wonderful with her young sons and were good in the house, although both preferred to spend alot of time outside.

They do require alot of brushing as they do shed and when they blow their winter coat it seems like it is never-ending!

Thanks Denise....

Another question i have is, if my sister does not intend to train him off leash and she has a large yard, would a husky try really hard to get out? or as long as it has had exercise will it be content not to try and run?

Oh also, i want to call this lady with the puppy but its not yet nine here, is it to early to call at 9am? should i wait till 10? sorry stupid question, i just really want to see this pup.

Would your sister want the dog if it was a year old and you were getting it then for her? Be careful that the attraction here is not that it is "little and cute" that will last 2-3 months. After 3 months go by, she is looking at a 24/7 15 yr. commitment to an animal. Has she said she is ready for that?
They DO try to leave the yard. They also can dig some very large holes.

I'm not trying to dissuade you from a Husky but they will try whatever means to escape whether it is digging under or going over a fence.  The fence will have to be a high one and the bottom will have to be handled special also so it can't dig under it.  Some are also known for being excellent climbers in an attempt to make a break for freedom!

I had a malamute but not a husky.  I love huskies.  Lil Exorcist has a husky pup but it's only a pup.  It is soooo cute though.

we had a smoyed husky and she was a runner. she showed up at our door and the owner had left her with friends while he was away.she has escaped from them .luckily there was still one of our found ads at the feed store because it was almost six months later that he came to claim her. in that time she got away from us alot and i always had to go run her down.he said she was his second husky, the first one was a runner too. unless she wants to spend alot of chasing time, she might want to consider another breed. i think it is always best for people to choose their own puppy or dog. it is a lifetime commitment.

My old room mate breeds use to breed huskys. He's huskys never ran away but of course he had 8 foot tall fence and had 1 foot wide concrete around the fence so they couldn't dig out. He's huskys loved to bark and chase each other around. He had a hard time training his husky's all of the normal ways to trian them didn't work so he had to do it a different way. But I don't know which way he used to trian them.

Yes I have a husky.  She's something else.  lol....she's not too much in to the running from me yet because she's only 3 months old right now.  She does have a problem with being in her kennel, she'll yelp and everything else at night.  Course we've been in hotels and at my parents and in complete chaos for the past month, so we're trying to get back onto a schedule with her.  Hubby will be going back to work startin Friday, so we'll see what happens.  The gentleman that lives next door to me used to have a husky that had kennel insanity, but I still believe that he'd love to have another one.  They are runners and they are diggers.  I've been told that when i get a yard to have at least a 6 foot fence and a hotwire on the bottom.  We're also having to work on the house training again.  like i said it got put on hold because of the moving around and such, she did fine until we got into the house, but she's also had more access to water so we've gotta work on her bladder control.

That's all i can really say for now, I agree with some of the others, make sure your sis knows what breed she wants before you pick on for her.  I'm the sort I dont really mind what breed as long as it's not a little dog.   Love my big dogs, but she may not be so flexible like that.

Yes its true what everyone has said. My neighbor has two siberian huskeys. I can't tell you how many times they have been picked up by the shelter. They dug a huge hole. that had to be filed with cement. So choose long and hard. Though I think you chose the lab-poo.

There is a chow mix on my driveway right now, some good sam lady is out there waiting for animal control, she has been following him around to see if he lived on the block, and is out there w/ the neighbor, waiting for the truck.
I am 6 mos. behind on my shots[Megan is allergic to Lepto, been putting it off] and Kitty is in season[good thing that dog is not jumping my fence, after her]. So, I am soooo not happy to see a stray on my driveway...
Chows do the same as Huskies. Known by vets to be the dog most likely to bite, also.

Had one once.
Most beautiful dog I have ever seen. Her name was Shabu.
Lived w/someone at the time. It "disappeared": Cannot say what went on there.
