neutering

Yesterday I made an appointment to have both Beeper and Bacon neutered the second week in August.  And last night I couldnt sleep a wink all I kept thinking about was I making the right decision.  I am not worried about Bacon because he is going to be 6 months old but I am terrified for Beeper who is 6 yrs old.  I know we should have had him neutered when we got him but we had reasons why we didnt but now it seems like the perfect time with Bacon getting it done.  I am just worried because I have heard older dogs have more trouble being neutered.  Has anyone on here had their dog neutered at an older age? If so did it take him a long time to bounce back.  The other thing is I dont know if I want to put him through the surgery.  He is totally healthy and the vet told me his habits and personality will not change because of his age.  He doesnt mark, he doesnt hump things, and he has always been laid back kind of dog. I just dont think I could handle it if something happened during the surgery but then again I dont think I could live with myself if he gets cancer because I didnt get him neutered.  Has anyone not had their dogs neutered? If so has any of them gotten testicular cancer?  Also does anyone have a dog that is neutered and one that is not? does it change their relationship with each other at all?  I know this is a long post but I am tore as to what to do.  I just want to do what is best for Beeper.  If I can only figure out what that is... :)

I can understand your concern.  As far as Beeper's age being a factor, as long as the vet feels he is healthly & a candidate for neutering I'd say go for it.  I have always had my furpals done around 6 mos. so I can't speak from 1st hand experience.  However, take a look at breeders.  They will use prime specimens of the breed for breeding purposes and when they are older and withdrawn from the breeding program most will then have them spayed/neutered.  And since it is safe to use the males until they are considerably older than the females I am sure many of them are as old or older than Beeper.

they will both do fine. neutering is a simple procedure. less complicated than spaying. when we had our farm, my husband use to castrate the baby pigs himself. and they all survived .lol  so a simple job at the vets would be a piece of cake compared to that.
