amount of food?

Hyde is 11 weeks and 15.5 pounds. Im feeding him three times a day, i give him about 1 cup for each meal, but he doesnt always finish. Is this amount of food too much? I get worried when he doesnt eat all his food but then i wonder if i am giving him too much? The breeder said to feed him however much he will eat in one sitting, but if i leave the bowl of food down he wont eat, maybe a couple bites. He will eat if i hand feed him or put peices of his food on the floor. I have only had him 3 days,is he adjusting still? probly. Anyways I know i shouldnt hand feed him but i get worried he wont eat, sometimes he looks like he will just walk off. Also i cant free feed and leave a bowl out all day cause of my other 3 dogs. Thanks!

Tiki and Lola both get fed once a day.  With both of them when we first got them they wouldn't eat so easily, but eventually they got hungry enough that it wasn't an issue (their not eating).  I believe the bowl size we have is about 2 cups.  I slightly worry that Tiki might not be getting enough (just because of the way she scarfs her food down) but I also know that if I just left it out all the time they'd eat and eat and eat and then would be fat and unhealthy puppies :)  I want to say the amount they both are getting right now is just over 2 cups???  I know it's pretty close to the "recommended amount" on the back of the bag for their weight and age.

Syd, I had to do the same thing with my pup Lilly. I would sit down right next to her bowl. I'd scoop up some in my hand and she would start to nibble. That went on maybe a week. Then she started to feel more comfy, I'd maybe have to just pick up a piece of kibble and give it to her, and show her her food. It will take a little time to adjust.  Sooooo everything sounds normal.  Remember Innova has much more of an impact ingrediant wize so eventually you may need to cut back. Let him eat as much as he wants in 10 minutes then take it up.  Remember pups need feeding at least three times a day.  I think yours is younger, so maybe 4 with Mr. Hyde.

I put his food out for about 10-15 min and then bring it up, but the problem is sometimes(mostly) he will take one or two peices of kibble and then walk away.

I'm trying not to hand feed, he didnt eat lunch today but it might be because it is so hot and he is tired, so if i feed him dinner and he doesnt eat should i hand feed him so he doestn miss two meals in a row? Is it bad if he misses two meals or so? He will eventually eat right?

Thanks everyone!

He's like 7 weeks right.  You do want to keep his glucose, energy level up. MAybe try mixing a tablespoon of canned puppy with it. You can wean him off it later.  But he needs his energy level up so's not to cause any other problems.  Right now do whatever it takes. He probably just does not feel like he is home yet.

I think 11 weeks is the age where 3 meals a day is suffient. But I would be bending over backwards to make sure he gets a good idea of where his food is, and coax the heck out of him to eat it. Wet it, do whatever it takes.

I feed once a day and i feed the amount recommended on the dog food bag.  Sounds like your pup likes to free feed.  I so wish i could free feed and my spitz would free feed fine but not my russell........lol.........he'd eat until he popped!

Hey O, do you have a pup? I've never heard of not giving a pup three or four feedings a day.

One thing to think about is that alot of dogs just don't eat as much when its hot.  If your new dog is an inside dog then this prob wont apply, but if he's outside any at all, the heat can make his appetite lessen.

Oscar eats 6.5 cups a day, and he is a free feeder. I put the food in his bowl when I wake up and he eats on it about 2 times a day. And when it is extremly hot out he doesn't eat as much...it was 109 here yesterday.

Maybe Hyde doesn't like the food. But I was always told that when he gets hungry enough he will eat. But being a puppy I would add a something tasty in his food.

Thanks guys! Ansy, i think your right about the heat, its been really hot here and he probly has had more exercise and stimulation in the last 3 days then he has ever had before. he could be overwhelmed with all the new things, hopefully he will adjust soon, cause its only going to get hotter!

Paige...6 cups!!!Wow, i knew large breeds need more food but wow,my girls get 2 cups a day each...lol.

I'm feeding Hyde the same food as the breeder did and im very slowly trying to switch him to Innova, I also started putting Vita gravy in the food in the mornings.
