I have been trying to talk my mother into getting a doggy door for trinity because once I leave for job core there will be no one here to let her out on a regular bases. My mother is saying no because she is afraid of 2 things. 1. That our cats which are indoor cats will get out because only 1 out of our 3 cats is afraid of the door. My anwser to this. I told her to just lock the cats up in the back on the house where they will have all 3 bedrooms to roam and both bathrooms. So it not like they won't have enough room. 2. She is afraid of some one breaking into our house by going through the doggy door. My anwser. Well I don't really have an anwser for it because since trinity is a doberman we will need to get the big doggy door and some to most people can fit through those doors. Then she was also afraid of trinity barking since we have had that problem for about the last year. I simple told my mother to put to bark collar on her when she not home. She also wanted to know what she should do when she is home. I told her that if she is going to let trinity out on a regular bases while she is home she can close the doggy door. Shes still not sure and I figured I would ask ya'll what ya'll think about it. So what are ya'lls opinions on this?
P.S.- You can't tell I'm from texas with all of those ya'lls in this. LOL
you can lock doggie doors. i would think someone would be afraid to get close to your house if they see a big dog. they dont know if she is friendly or not. does she stay inside alot?. is she totally housebroken? if so ,as long as she is let out in the morning she should be fine during the day as long as she doent have access to food during the day.youre mom will have to establish a new routine .she will find one that works for her.
At the moment she stays inside alot due to the heat and she is black so she gets really hot. Also my mother has gotten trinity on a bad routine where she lets and wants to let trinity out just about every hour and then she gripps when trintiy uses the restroom in the house and shes not understanding what I was telling her. I keep telling my mother that if you keep letting trinity out that often she will think she will always be let out that often and will not learn to hold it. Also once I go away to job core from 8:30am to about 6pm there will be no one at the house so I figured it would be better to get a doggy door.
a doggie door would be an excellent idea. and she could contain the cats like you said in the back of the house during the day when shes not home. then trinity could let herself out when she needs to go and she could come back in if it gets too hot outside.
Yea thats what I was thinking but my mother is making it out to be this big problem and I didn't see the problem so I figured I would ask ya'll and if ya'll saw a problem.
10 hours is a long time. I have kennels inside the house, with lix-it bottles and fans. I have left dogs that long inside them, while not regularly, when I visited my grandma, and when I go to Disneyland. Surprizingly, they all held it that long. I gave them a light meal of 1/2 a wheat pita and they got plenty time to do business outside, before I left. Surprizingly, none had accidents in the kennel while I was gone. I think that the dog door is a risk. Also, other animals can get in, like rats, cats that spray, raccoons etc. Not to mention small axe murderers, and thieves... Let me know if you need further info on the kennels. They are a god-send [ask Zoe].
The kennels would be nice but we have no where to put them. I did try to talk my mother in to converting the garge into a giant kennl. Have chain link fence on the inside of the garge but still have it to where you can raise and lower the garge door. And just put trinity in there cause that way its really easy to clean up after her if she does have an accedent. Also other animals wouldn't come in. They don't even come into our yard because of trinity.
I was talking about this lastnight with michael..the only worry i had is that a burglar could climb through it as it would have to be one big doggy door. Also i feel alot happier knowing harvey is contained in a kennel .so if anyone came in the garden i.e kids, etc then Harvey could have contact with them.. Harvey is 100% non-aggresive but its better for me to be safer than sorry. I could never see him hurt anyone . his bark is enough to put people off from entering but i always here these stories of perfectly pleasant family dogs mauling someone and i dont want to be part of that statistic just my opinion if it was me.
i dont cage any of my animals. thats why i have a fence around my yard. they can go in and out through our dog door anytime during the day. at night they are inside and the door is locked. you have a different situation as there will be a long period of unsupervised time for your dog. if its cooler in the garage, as most are, maybe she could be in there during the day.or put your dog door on the garage and lock the door that leads into the house. that way she can get to potty and get back in to get out of the heat. and locking the door leading into the house will provide some security.
I thought about that but our garge is located on the front of our house so we would have to extend the fence in order to do that. And we defently don't have the moeny for that. If it was a wooden fence that would be easy but we have chain link fence so we would probably have to pay someone to come out and extend the yard for us. Most people don't even try to pet trinity. Every since we got her the kids from the junior high that is right up the street from me who use to walk through the ally to get home don't any more because they are scared of her. She hates strangers. She will not bite them but she will bark and growl and chase them so burglars aren't really a big deal to me. I did think about putting her in the crate that we got for her when I first got her but she has gotten so big that she doesn't fit in it anymore. I've looking for another crate but its hard to find one. When I first got trinity I went to every pet store in town looking for the biggest crate and when I found it I bought it. I told them what kind of dog I had and they said she would fit fine but shes gotten so big that when she is in it she can't raise her head, can't lay down, and can't turn around. Basicly she can't move. i have been thinking about maybe doing the doggy door and kennel think together. Such as maybe find a place either in the back yard or somewhere in the surrounding area around my house where I can put a doggy door but instead of it going into saw the back yard, have it lead into a kennel. Don't ya'll think that would work?
I would go with the dog door. I know Oscar can fit through the door my inlaws have and its for a lab. And I know Oscar is way bigger than a dobe. You would be surprised on how small of a space they can fit through. My inlaws have never had a problem with their door through. No criminals have ever attempted to enter the house. And since you have a privacy fence (i guess) no one will even know about a dog door.
My bad.... I remember seeing wood fence but you said if you had one. But then if anyone wants to break in with a doberman in the yard/house then they are braver than me. I would still go with the doggie door. I would get a doggie door but I don't need my child crawling through it behind my back.
I actually hear what you are saying my little cousins crawled through my uncles cat door before it took us forever to find her. She followed the cat out. It actullay after we found her seemed kind of funny. LOL
I have a dog door and 2 cats that i don't want outside. They never attempt it and if one sits by the door, i just scare it away so they stay away from the dog door.....lol......harsh but works. I have smaller dogs but i know they would go balistic if someone tried to get in the house through the dog door. I have had it for 2 years and we love it. We didn't get the wall one. We got the glass one that goes next to the sliding glass door. No cutting or drilling.
