Be sure to check out The Chicken Chronicles........our babies should be here on Tuesday and we'll keep pics showing their growth. I can't wait till they are here!
I know its mean but its funny when they are killing a chicken for food and they cut off his head and its still running around. I'm also sad about it cause the chikcen is dieing.
Ive seen that happen before and its freaky ..my dad has chickens for food and turkeys..they live a great free range life and are not mistreated ..its sad you cannot say the same for the poor mass-production chickens that live their lives without fresh air, sunlight, and space...My dad kills them quick so they do not suffer..the chickens which are slaughtered on mass in factories suffer alot..i watched a programme not long ago about the truth behind how we get the meat onto our supermarket shelves ..it was very upsetting
On my mom's small ranch, nearby..growing up, I had 30 chickens at one time. I would keep a proper rooster, to keep the hens happy. I just love chickens.
Twink, there will be some for laying, some for eating, and I'm sure some will be pets...lol.
Ivy, yes we will be hatching babies (only 3 at a time...experimenting with a small incubator first) and we havel also ordered 34 one day old babies. I will be keeping up with their progress with photos and updates on the Chicken Chronicles link on the home page (www.thefurum.com).
As a side note, the hatchery called me today and the babies won't be shipping till next Monday. What a bummer. We were so looking forward to them being here tomorrow. Ah well, the fertile eggs will be here tomorrow and will be set in the incubator. They should hatch 21 days later.
Ansy~ i justed notice they will be due to hatch on august the 9th ..thats my sissys 13 birthday lol.
My mum adores chichens is very experienced in hatching and raising chickens and turkeys and currently has 4 incubaters full which hold a total of 200 eggs lol shes one crazy woman..im not sure if you have tried anything like this before but if you have any problems or questions i can ask her for you or maybe i can help
My mum basically breeds the rarer varietys and send for alot of eggs of ebay from u.s sellers and they have a great fertile rate. She also gets the rarer coloured turkeys to breed and sell on.
good luck with the new arrivals when they hatch
this is one of the polish chicks that hatched not long ago..i love their crazy hair when they are fully feathered
they are adorable ..even whey they are fully grown. They each have theri own personality. We had one very tame one that thought it was a human and would come in the house . it was a barred plymouth rock hen called Henny Penny and would perch of the sof a next to you..it was amazing she never pooped anywhere.
I should be walking down to my mums in alittle while to walk jake and alfie with harvey whilst my mums at work so i'll have to take some pics
My father use to hatch eggs when I was a kid. I did it for years with him, but while refreshing myself on how to do it again, I realized that I had forgotten all about having to sprinkle the eggs with water....lol....because the incubator dries them out.
I've been reading up on it alot. I hope the first hatch goes well. I don't know how they'll look. The hen is a Black Austrolorpe and the Rooster is a Game bird (Jungle Fowl).
I love the crested varieties! We ordered a few of those too! They are so cool looking when they get feathered!
PD, they didn't have all of the ones I ordered hatch as planed....so they will wait and ship them next week...lol. Its all over 2 chicks, but they can't just ship 2 by themsleves....must be at least 25 in a box so they can keep warm...so those 2 have held up my whole order...lol
we used to have chickens too. when we had our farm my husband would go every other day to wilcox farms ( a big dairy and chicken farm ) and pick up the dead chickens to feed our pigs. it was at the end of our road and you had to pass our place to get there. i started going with him. when we got home and he dumped the barrels, i noticed a couple of chickens still moving . so i took them out and brought them in the house and nursed them back to health. everytime i went i would rescue more. i ended up with over 40 , healthy chickens and we even went and bought a rooster.
one day the farm manager stopped at our house and told us that we couldnt come on the farm because he saw our chickens and we couldnt have poultry and come on their grounds because they didnt want any deseases carried to their chickens. when jay told him how we got our chickens he couldnt believe that they were "brought back to life" lol. but he still said they had to go. we took them all out to my cousins farm and they were thrilled to get them. i look back and laugh at how i cried for weeks over having to part with a bunch of chickens !! lol
Twink.......did your mom candle her eggs? If so, when is a good time to start (how long after they've been in incubation)? And how often did she do it?

She usually candles them after 3 days as before then she found she didnt see much..but she does it pretty quick so they are not out of the incubator longer than 30 minutes. She then does it at 8 days by which time you should see an embryo moving. After that she does it the last time at 11/12 days just to have a check that none have died whilst in the early stages of growth..then waits until they have hatched..any that show no sighns of hatching she candels again just to see if they have died or are just late and need a helping hand
