New dog...maybe

Me and Brad are thinking about adopting a dog. His name is Jake and he is a young mastiff. He looks sweet. I think he is 2 so he has about another year in growing.

My sister called me yesterday wanting to know if I knew anyone that wanted a good dog. She delivered to the Grapevine Shelter and saw him. He was owner surrendered(sp) because they didn't want to pay a pet deposit at a apartment. But if he isn't adopted out by the 21st he will be put down. Sad....But here is the catch. They won't adopt out to someone with small kids because of his size. But other than that he is good with kids and good with dogs. So if we decide to get him my sister will have to do the adopting. The adoption fee is 40 dollars. I'm just curious how Oscar will act to another full grown dog.

So, what do y'all think?

I think its a chance for oscar to have a playmate. They might have problems at first but thats to be expected. It sounds good though.

Aw Paige! I'm so jealous! You will have the two dogs I love the most! Danes and Mastiffs! For obvious biased reasons, I totally think you should do it! lol

LOL!!!! I know I should get him, but I need to talk to Brad more about it. What if it doesn't work out between the dogs? That is my worse fear. I always said that if I was to adopt it would be a puppy not a two year old. But in reality he is still a puppy. I'll call my sister again tonight.

I might have to be the bummer. I'm not saying it can't work. BUT when it was time for me to get another dog, everyone advised me not to get another male, as the original male is likely to have a problem with another adult male coming into the house. I didn't listen. I took Manson with me when I went to get Bosco, and I would not have taken him if they had hated each other. Well, they got along great-- for 3 days. Until they realized that they were both living here and neither would give up the dominant position between the two. Keeping them separated -- very separated-- they cannot just be on opposite sides of a door, is not easy and with children, mishaps do happen. The mishaps are gruesome and result in large vet bills and injured dogs. I told everyone I can handle it, and I can, but in the future I will not make the decision to bring a new adult male into a home with an adult male already living there. I am all about adopting older (as in not puppies) dogs, but after some experience and learning the hard way, I would only bring in an adult of the opposite sex from the dog that already lives there.

Are mastiffs normally dog aggressive? Are danes?

I won't say mastiffs and Danes are not aggressive or not. But the ones I have been around have been sweeties. Oscar doesn't have a problem with neutered males, but intact ones he doesn't like so much. The only thing I would have to change would be feeding them seperatly...so that means no more free feeding for Oscar. We are still thinking about it. My sister has a female English Mastiff and she is a very calm and lazy dog.

here is a good article on mastiffs. the second paragraph "Do I Really Want a Mastiff? Why Do I Want a Mastiff?" goes along with what shiny says about the male -female issue. they may get along, but if they choose to fight, you have two giant breeds going toe to toe and it could get ugly. they may get along without and problems. you just cannot be sure. most mastiffs are refered to as "gentle giants" and are very affectionate dogs.

It seems that the mastiff and dane are very similar. Right now we are 40% leaning towards bringing him home. We just still have to talk about it some more. I have known tons of people that have two Danes and they have never had a problem. I might have to get a bigger bed though. LOL!!!! And if we do get him and it doesn't work out my sister said she would take him when she got moved into her new house. She has a mastiff too so she knows the ropes of one.
