When dogs go to the bathroom and the smell for a spot what are they smelling for? What meets the criteria for the right place to go? I have always been curious about this.

Zoe....this made me laugh.......I have always wondered that too! I mean, do they wanna pee where they pee'd at before or do they need to mark a spot that they haven't got yet? I'm glad humans don't have this instinct...lol
Oh, come on, Ansy. Men may not pee on you [much] but they sure climb on you in public, marking you with aftershave and visually making sure others know you are taken. I made SURE my lover wore a bit of my perfume leaving my house, and have smelt things too feminine on him to be his own cologne, also. We mark, also, we just have help in a bottle.
Harvey will smell around and mark over a scent which he finds to claim that patch as his own. He will also mark over his own previous wee scents to have the same effect
harley does that. when the frenchies go out to pee he has to run over and smell the spot and then he will pee there too. then they run back over and they all smell it. i know its a doggie thing but eeewwww gross !
