I have been watching the news since the hurricane hit. I can't believe what I'm seeing. Is anyone else absolutely floored? All of those people who didn't evacute. Some with babies!
And I personally believe looters should be shot! I understand getting diapers, water, shoes, formula etc.., but these people are taking everything! Jewelry, cash, 6 pairs of shoes. I can't understand that. This morning I heard on CNN that they shot at a helicopeter that was rescuing people. What is wrong with these people?!? Now they are taking the National Guard off rescue duty to restore order.
Other people are going to die waiting for help because these idiots want to steal Air Jordans. And my question is: What are they going to do with their loot? There's nowhere to store it! IDIOTS!!!
I feel so bad for those poor people who DID evacute to the Superdome only to have it be hell on earth. Little water, little food, no sanitation, no a/c, no medical services. Thank God for Texas!
Me and Brad were talking about this last night. I can understand stealing like clean underwear, socks, and just the nesseities(sp) but a big screen TV. Give me a freaking break!!!!! You don't need a TV to survive.
I totally agree. I just woke up and the news isn't on yet. Did anyone watch the news this morning and if so what does new orleans look like today. I remember hearing that if they didn't get everyone out that they would probably be dead by today because of the riasing water.
New Orleans is a very poor city with a much larger cash economy than most places (because half the population gets paid under the table). Most of the people who didn't evacuate simply couldn't. They don't own cars; they don't have bank accounts or credit cards; they live paycheck to paycheck and couldn't afford plane tickets. And quite frankly, many of the people there wouldn't even know how to buy a plane ticket, not that it matters much because most of the flights for Sunday were cancelled anyway. Also, by Saturday afternoon, the city was out of gas, so some people who did have cars had no way to fuel them. The people who didn't evacuate were stuck there.
I was almost stuck there. On Sunday morning, my car wouldn't start--dead battery. AAA was completely backed up with service calls. After a couple of hours of looking for someone to jump my car, I finally found a cop who helped and allowed me to escape.
Yes, somebody needs to smack the people who are stealing the large screen TVs, but don't assume that the people with babies are uncaring, irresponsible parents. They're doing the best they can with basically no resources.

proto, I'm really glad you shed some light on that for me. I was really angry at the people for not getting out of there and doing the right thing for their families. Although I really feel bad for them I'm glad they weren't just being irresponsible like I assumed.

Being everything is going to have to built up from the ground, I would say all the businesses should just let them have the necessitys. Yep, it is rediculous to steal something you have no use for. I guess they were wishful thinking that the water would be gone in a short amount of time, so they could use it or sell it. Heck maybe even float in it.
I feel the most for the elderly, the children , babies and animals. They can not easily help themselves.
Proto, have you heard any news about the kennel you were at. Have the animals survived?
I don't know what happened to the animals in the kennel. I stayed as long as possible to get dogs back to owners or friends of owners who were willing to take the dogs with them. We were down to seven dogs. I told the kennel owner I was leaving and used every dish, bucket, whatever to put out fresh water for the dogs. The last time I talked to the owner, she was still planning on staying because she had a couple petsitting dogs and a 101-year-old lady to care for in addition to her own pets. I don't know if she stayed; I don't know if she's alive.
The kennel owner has a van, and her partner has a car. So, I'm hoping that she loaded her pets in her partner's car and the kennel dogs into her van and got out of town, but I'm afraid that didn't happen. She has a cell phone, but I haven't been able to reach her.
I drive a Corolla, so between my 55-60 pound dogs and 2 cats (and their stuff--crates, food, et cetera), I didn't have any room to squish extra animals into my car. Because of the cats, who have to travel in crates, Argus and McKeever didn't have room to lie down without sleeping on top of each other. I got out with my pets, a handful of T-shirts, a couple of pairs of shorts, a couple of pairs of jeans, a sweatshirt, and some sneakers.
If I could have taken any of the kennel dogs with me, I would have. I did the best I could but still feel terribly guilty for having left. I was close to the dogs that were there because I actually lived in the kennel, and the no-crate environment made them seem like my own part-time pets. I fear they're all dead.

I completly understand on why some people couldn't get out. Simply no money.... And I have no problem with people taking what they need to live on. And thats not TVs, DVD players, and jewelry.
Proto, thats all you can do. The owners should have come to save their dogs. I hope to god that they did, and the othe caretaker, with the eldrely women. God this is just so devistating. I'm glad you were able to get out. How is it where you are? Didn't they get hit too?
….it is so very, very, very sad.... stealing - looting ... comes from an instinct for survival ... so true these people -- some are very poor and they only Know survival... through barter , pawn shops, and trade.... So I would guess they loot the things .. to them that used to hold monetary value. In shock and not fully in understanding yet ... that there is no value in a TV or stereo...
___________________- Did anyone see the footage of the sea lions? ... made me cry.... I can't even grasp the amount of animals that need help.... not much is shown on the news about it... I can only imagine and CRY.... _______________________________
The human life is in need enough ... little lone adding the animal life.... Holy Blessings... may everything be better for all.....
I am completely heartbroken over all of this. I am in shock and feel sick for those there.
I also am sick over the looting. I am all for survival...not an issue, but why in the hell would you take things that you will not be able to take out once they force you out since the buildings will most likely be destroyed in the long run. You didn't have the means to get yourself out of town...how are you taking your new electronics with you...OR....who do you plan on selling them too??!!??!!?? No logic at all.
You can't use the stuff...no power!!!! Geez....just plain stupid. And if you are going to steal ten pairs of shoes you better darn well be taking them to people to use!!!!! GGRR!
And why are they shooting at rescue squads??
For those stealing arm loads of clothing....well, won't you look nice leaving town in your new duds????????!!!!!!! Whatever...
lol....I am on a soap box and I am not getting down!!!
Well, I posted an address on a new thread about providing shelter for victims. I sure am feeling the need to offer something to someone.
