Lotsa people!!

I just scrolled down to the bottom to see who all was on...7 of us!  Woo,  just add some guests and we might have the most people online since 6/15

Anyways, just got back (well 2 hours ago) from taking Lola & Tiki into the vet.   I had put them outside for a couple of hours yesterday and when I brought them in Lola's eyes were all puffy.  So I made her an appt. and since Tiki will have to have an "inital" exam prior to being spayed had her taken in as well.  The vet used some complex word to explain lola's eye (conjunctivitus I think but it just sounds wrong)  Ask me, it's just allergies, excitement, and stress.  Her eyes started going red from pulling at the leash in the vets office because she wanted to play with everyone!  Lola weighs a whopping 20 lbs.  Tiki at 4 months is 27 lbs.   Vet is requiring a fecal exam and either bloodwork or continuous (sp) heartworm meds prior to her spay.  he also recommended giving them a vacc. for lyme disease.  That vacc. is 20-30 bucks per shot and requires 2 doses.  Just for them to get that vacc. alone is 60 per dog PLUS the 40 per dog exam fee!!!!  $200 for them both to get it!  I'm sure he's going to try to recommed it for the kitties too!  *Sigh*   Vets never cost this much in Kansas.....Today's trip alone was 130, for 2 exams, 1 eye cream gunk, 2 nail trims, and 1 kennel cough vacc.  (required for her spay)

rocky has had an eye problem since we got him. i think it is common with the french bulldogs. the vet called it the same thing, conjunctivitis. she gave us a tube of opthamolic ointment to keep puting in his eye. it really didnt help much. i still have to clean his eye out on a daily basis. it gets pretty goopy at times. he also has a really dry patch on the side of his nose.the same side that he has an eye problem. i think he has allergies. another common thing in the frenchies. just make sure when you have her spayed that the doctor gets a copy of the anesthesia protocal for the bull breds. some anesthetics can be deadly to frenchies. if you dont have it, i will post it below. its better to be safe concerning our babies.

Anesthesia Protocol

NEVER GIVE FRENCHIES: Ace promazine Pentobarbital aka Pentathol (injectable anesthesia) Metofane (inhalant gas) Halothane (gas anesthesia)

USE WITH CAUTION: Dormitor (reversible anesthesia/sedative)

SATISFACTORY CHOICES FOR FRENCHIES: Ketamine (usually used in combo with valium as an injectable anesthesia/sedative) Valium (see above) Torbutrol (analgesia)

OPTIMUM CHOICES: Propofol (injectable) with either of the following 2 gas anesthetics as a maintenance: Isoflurane(aka IsoFlo) OR Sevoflurane (aka SevoFlo)

EXTRAS FOR C-SECTIONS: (This is in addition to the Optimum anesthetic protocol listed above) Atropine given at induction Place the mom-to-be on IV fluids Oxytocin injections (usually one after all the pups are out and she begins sewing up the uterus and the second about 20-30 minutes later) Antibiotic injection post-op

INTUBATION vs. MASKING/CONING DOWN: EVERY brachycephalic dog that goes under anesthesia should have an endotracheal tube (ET) placed in their trachea! Always! We need to protect that airway at all times.... The tube should be left in until they are VERY awake and about to chew it out... I use the intravenous propofol to induce anesthesia (which puts them under) this gives me a few minutes to place the ET tube... then I connect them to either the sevo or iso... so they are always tubed...

Be Careful when masking a frenchie down. Masking them down can sometimes be harder on brachycephalic dogs because they struggle to hold their breath (so they don't inhale the strange smelling gas) which can irritate the airways and deplete their oxygen levels (which you do not want before surgery). It is my opinion that using injectable and then tubing them gives them an optimum oxygen supply which is ideal for frenchies.

Err. get a new vet. That one sounds like my dentist.

Dusty...excellent advice. It is always good to know as much[or more] than your vet does...

I have called around to quite a few vets here and they are all outrageously priced!  Plus I refuse to take my dogs into Banfield, the PetSmart vet clinic.  Part of it is because we took lola in georgia and the vet was rude and they too were expensive.  I dont have the 300 extra dollars a year to spend on their "puppy program" to make taking her in less, especially when Lola is almost out a year old and in theory my dog's shouldn't be seeing a vet THAT often. *Sigh*  I'll take the kitties there for their free exam and their spay.  Since Tiki's already gone there I might as well finish out there with her spay.  If I go to a diff. vet for her spay then I have to go through pretty much the same stuff all over again, exam fee, bah bah bah.  *sigh*
