Any1 own a dachshund?

Does anyone here own a dachshund here? In a few years I plan to get one. Probaly within 2-3 yrs. from now. We are buying a trailer this year. And then next year moving it to its own piece of land with a fenced in yard. And I know this will be my next breed to get. My hubby's cousins own 2 mini dachshunds and i feel in love with them instantly. So does anyone own one here that could tell me their experience with owning one.

I have never owned one but have met quite a few over the years.  Most have been really sweet!

My cousin has one. His name is Jackson and he is a turd. Right now my dads pit pup is there and the weiner dog is the boss. And they are just a few weeks apart in age. But other than that he is a total cutie....

they are cute little dogs. my ex has a red doxie that he takes riding with him on his tryke. he even had a little harley jacket and helmut made for him. duke sits on the seat behind him strapped in his harness and loves it. when dave asks him if he wants to go for a ride ,he runs right to the bike and gets in his seat. i never would have thought a dog would enjoy riding so much. lol

yup, that's my bebe! and Harleys just a crazy nutball... They are digging dogs though and Buster has brought in a couple animals(squirrels, mice) but i think they were dead before he got them, he isn't really a weenie dog... he's more of a sausage dog...

I grew up with my grandma having some through the years and hubby and i had one once (died at 5 months due to distemper,  RIP Chandler)  They are fast little dogs and a blast.  Hubby wants another one.  They are prone to back and leg problems so avoid stairs and jumping up as much as possible.  Hubby's aunt and uncle had one in a 3 story house and along the wall of all the stairs, they built a carpeted ramp so the doxie avoided the stairs.  He never had back issues.

Actually, It's the jumping down thats bad on their backs, because they are hitting the floor as opposed to what happens when they jump up on something.   It's always a good Idea to help them up, but definitely help them down.  Most of Busters back problems came from when we first got him and he tried to dig under the fence in the back yard, but his collar got caught on the fence... most expensive free dog we ever had... lol

Hey there thanks for all the responses. I kinda of thought they probably had some back problems. But I tell ya neither of my hubby's cousins dachshunds had that problem. At least not that I know of or could tell. Oscar, the eldest that was PTS, he had other problems. He had a alot of fatty tumors, he was half blind and half deaf. And I think thay sadi arthritis. But i do know this is he had a vest for life even though he had all those problems.

if you mean what creatures do they bring in.. buster has brought in a couple squirrels, and a dead mouse and some birds... Harley does not seem to be too much into bringing in his prizes if he takes any, but we also have a lab/pit/chow mix (ie: big mutt) and I have had to drag all three dogs in, away from a dead cat or possum who did not have sense enough to stay out of our yard... or who just plain didn't know... I have called animal control many times to take dead cats and possums out of our back yard, and one time had to give buster a bath at about 1 in the am, after draggin him away from some dead thing... I don't know who is catching them, all I see is the aftermath... I hope thats what you were asking, cause if it wasn't, you'll just have to rephrase :)

Yeah that was pretty much what I was asking. See once we get our trailer on some land I plan to have so chickens(ya know freash eggs) and I was wondering if that would be a problem with this breed.

They were originally bred for hunting badgers, I think, which is why they dig, so I think if you do get the chickens, you should put in a fence that goes underground a good couple feet.  I bet it more depends on the dog specifically, as in their specific personality and such, because I don't thinkHarley is aggressive with small animals and the such, but we got Buster off the street, so thats rpobably what he did for food before he was rescued... my best advice would be to introduce a potential pet to potential chickens and see how it goes before settling
