I am so angry at my neighbors, The night before last we got back late and I went out and got Koda and put him to bed and we could here our neighbors talking quite loudly. It was odd because it was around 11:00 or so but we didn't think much of it, well, yesterday our neighbor comes over and said that he saw us out last night and was just checking to see if we were wondering what was going on. Apparently a raccoon had crawled over the gate and was trying to eat the dogs food, of course it set the dogs off barking and so they came out and after they saw what it was they shot and killed it. Or as he said they kind of "eliminated it". Now we live in a small town in the middle of wheat fields, Raccoons are bound to be out anyway but of course they are going to eat dog food left out, thats why we only feed Koda in his crate.
I called Fish and Wildlife to find out if anything could be done or at least prevent them from doing it again. And the lady there was a real b**ch and just rudely said how she gets 30 calls a day from people in "--------"(bigger city) about Raccoons and that there was nothing they were going to do. She said that if the raccoon was eating the dogs food, that the guy was merely protecting his property. I got very upset and called hubby and told him because he was upset about them killing it too. He said "so they can shoot a fire arm in the middle of the night with kids in the neighborhood because he is "protecting his property" but yet a dog can't bite an intruder in your own home?" He didn't even try to scare the raccoon away or anything.
I wish there was something I could do, we love raccoons and would love to see them around. I don't dare do anything that may draw them even close to our house for fear my neighbors might shoot them.
thats horrible. no animal deserves to be killed just because he is looking for food. raccoons can be a threat to humans if they are cornered and feel trapped, but usually they will run at the first sight of a human.how did he know that it didnt have babies somewhere and was just trying to find food for them.i would have had some choice words for that guy ! i guess having a gun and being able to shoot an innocent animal made him feel more like a "real" man , instead of the blooming idiot he really is !
also he had no right to kill that animal whilst the Racoon was just doing its 'animal thing' and looking for food..they dont know the difference between a bowl full of dog food from anything else ..
thats made me angry so i would hate to know how mad you feel right now. It must have been very distressing
I am still extremely upset. I don't know how you can look them in the eye and shoot them and be okay with it. I am not a hunter obviousely and I do not agree with it in 95% of the circumstances. But their was no reason to kill this Coon, none at all. The idiots shouldn't have left the dogs food outside in the first place.
It is frustrating, Diagonal behind the alley is the person that we think either did something to the dogs or at least scared them really bad trying to get them to quit barking (which no one else in the neighborhood heard), then there are these to which live right across the street from me and the only other two houses are an older lady who we never see (right next door and then right behind us across the alley the people are moving and an avid hunter is moving in. We do not know what his morals on hunting are but I am sure he will get along great with the Raccoon killers. I am starting to hate where I live, if we could move I definitely would.
You might want to check with your local police to see if there is any law pertaining to the firing of a gun in your area. I know in my community guns cannot be fired within so many feet of a dwelling. (for the life of me I can't remember how many feet)
