Ok i have a small alotment in the village where i grow a few veg & flowers for cutting. the big green things a Marrow big enough to feed a small army. The yellow things a courgette.which i all have ideas on how to cook with But the white things are Patty Pans which are a kinda squash. I love Butternut squash but i have no idea what to do with these huge things..first time ive grown them..
Try to pick the green thing smaller, they are more tender. Cube it and grill it between beef chunks on the BBQ, or grill it in the pan, with a touch of oil & garlic, then dip in ranch dressing[can be breaded in finger sized strips and fried]...good with parmesan cheese, and ranch or bleu dressing. The other, white squash, get a narrow baking dish, slice them in 1/2-with the pointy end down, and the sliced side up, bake them in the oven with brown sugar and butter, or butter and maple syrup[the real kind]. I say use a narrow dish, because the squash meat will burn if the dish does not support it, the tough outer skin holds the soft stuff in rather well. When it is baked, it is soft like butter and is just scooped from the shell... I love growing squash, they grow like weeds, just water, then eat.
Actually, that is a description of acorn squash, it may work better to just cut a hole in the top of the white squash, and leave it whole, it does not look tall enough to make 2 equal halves
Thanks kitty .. especially the idea on the Marrow and how to cook it..i used to just boil in in salted water and it always turned out like wall paper paste.
Too true about what you say about Squash plants growing like weeds..It was lile the invasion of the body snatchers down there with them trailing everwhere i must have ended up with approx 30 of them The plants went crazy ..i've also heard you can eat the flowers by stuffing them with cous-cous or something similar and roasting them but i have yet to try that one. Had to give alot of the Squashes away to neighbours who looked at me kinda weird lol.
I've saved a few to make some odd looking Faces for Halloween
I remember when I was a kid, I had a garden hobby in the back yard, I would bring zucchini, avocado, oranges, and eggs from my chickens, inside fresh every day. My mom, one day noticed, that there was produce just every where on the kitchen sink. She said "WHERE are you getting all this from?"
Your marrow is what we call italian squash. I love to steam it and put butter, and parmasean cheese on it. Occasionally I bbq it. Oh like Kitty said pick them when they are maybe 6 inches long, or smaller, flowers are left on in the ritzty restraunts.
