I can't believe them. I swear they do not know their breeds from their butts! I was scoping out Petfinder and decided to check on the shelter that I used to work at. Now when I worked there, if there was a dog that we weren't positive on the breed, I would do my hardest to find out what it was closest to. I was the one who ran the petfinder site for my shelter. Well, now someone else is and they are driving me NUTS! Tell me this dog looks like what they put the breed as............
I also think Akita mix. I work with the shelters in my state, and they actually say that they do that as a marketing tool to get more people to adopt. In my state, a dog could be in the shelter for months under 'boxer mix' but the moment they say it could be mixed with a mastiff..BAM! That dog is adopted. Maybe that's what's happening there? If so, hey..anything to get um adopted eh?
But I do know what you mean. I get frustrated when people say a dog is a certain breed and it really isn't. That happened one time with my in-laws dog. It's a purebred Cattle Dog (Blue Heeler) and this lady was insisting that it was a 'mutt'. It's even more annoying when it's your own dog and people try to dispute it, lol. My biggest gripe is in pet stores when the employees try to pass off a mixed breed as something rare (The 'Toi Leo' is the biggest one, which is a Pom/Pekinese mix). That gets to me so much because not only are they telling the public that it's something it isn't, but they're also trying to say they're worth more because of it. Bleh.

I remember when I was little and my yorkie ran away and when called the pound, put and ad in the newspaper, and put up signs around the neaiborhood. Well a few days after we did this the pound called sayingthey think they found our dog. When we got there they showed us the dog they thought was ours. It turned out to be a basset Hound. LOL
My shelter doesn't usually try to change breeds for adoption but they will go by what an owner says it is.....even if they are completely wrong. I called on this dog and was told that this is probably what the owner said it was! It is not going to help the shelter get this dog adopted but rather make everyone think our shelter is extremely STUPID! They need to post that the owner said that is what he was, that way the shelter doesn't look like an idiot.
