Mommy's little monster had dug such a huge hole that I dispaired of when I had to fill it. I went out this morning and swept the dirt into the smaller hole. When it was full, I squared my shoulders and went around the corner after the crater sized hole. Turns out she had started a second hole, going the other way, and had completely filled the crater with the dirt from her new excavation, and hardly made a deep hole at all in the process. I hope all my days go this well...
Tucker is the only one of my dogs that dig. He hardly ever does it anymore. Him and Zoe used to go at it like crazy and I would have the crater holes all over my yard. That is when Daisy decided it wasn't worth going all the way outside anymore and she decided to just hop out the back door and pee on the rug.

I have huge holes all over my back. Barney and Winter are my hole diggers. They dig all their holes right next to the fence but yet they never dig out. They dig stright down not at an angle. Wiggles also digs but her little paws haven't done any damage YET!
Yeah, I monitor them everyday, to make sure none of the holes are going towards the fences. Actually, they get good excersize, and enjoy digging, so I permit a bit of it. Only problem is I need to remember to clean their grubby ears, as they will get an infection from all the dirt. I need to keep the holes filled when it may rain. Kitty loves mud...
Oscar used to dig when we had our lab. I swear we used to have massive holes. You could never go in our backyard in the dark because you would end up in a booby trap.
Harveys makes some extreme ankle-breakers of holes ~he loves some nice soft dirt to dig his way to happiness.dont know why he does it he gets loads of exercise and attention ..i never walk across the lawn at night else i might end up in Accident&Emergency..
They do it because of instinct. Dogs, like wolves, build dens to live in. When my dogs were outside dogs, many years ago, I went out and they seemed missing. I called very loudly, thinking if they were down the street they would come back. Then I saw, first one dog, then the other emerge from a hole they had made in the yard... My dogs can dig up to 4 feet in about 20 minutes.
My Amstaff did some digging when he was a pup, but we tryed to discourage the behaivor. We were told the breed loves to be in the dirt, and will dig for hours if let. I guess it comes from they were used for catching and destroying rats and other small vermin. I was happy when Timber gave up on his own, thought he will tear up a patch of dirt if chipmunks are around.
Cookie's doing well, 9 months old now and even more adorable than ever. She has recently learned about digging, when I catch her red-handed (red-pawed, lol) I say Cookie, NO and take her away from where she was digging, hard for me to be mad because she looks so cute covered in mud. :) I have to give her a bath right away and mop the kitchen floor, she is creating extra work for me!!
I tried to upload pics but it's not working for me, getting an error message saying file size must be greater than zero...that's odd. Check out my flickr page. http://flickr.com/photos/chileanbarbie
Thanks so much, I plan to. Summer was hectic and my little Cookie takes up all of my time. She is a pleasure though...I can't remember what my life was like before I had her!! :)
