My first day as a vet assistant

Yo! Well, today was my first day as a vet assistant...

They were all really nice and informative about how to do everything. I had to learn how to fold and store towels and crapes for surgery, take fecals and prepare them for the vet, taking temps, vaccinating(I will need more practice but that kind of stuff I can catch on to) restrain kitties and doggies, laundry(already do enough at home!, ha) clean cages...

I observed a cat neuter...which seriously was cool. ha...he cut the scrotum, popped out a testicle and tied the spermatic cord in a knot and cut the ball off and tossed it on the table...it sounded like a rock! Ha! A girl was putting a cat to sleep while I was folding laundry...we were multitasking, it seemed. I was suprised I wasn't freaking out but it was sick and neede to be put down so it didn't bother me.

I watched the main vet express a dogs anal glands...ewwww.....umm, observed routine exams and stuff....took a dog from the operating room to it's cage...poor thing woke up and screamed almost all afternoon(it was lonely)

All in all, my first day wasn't too bad! :)

Huh.
Sounds like something that you were cut out to do...
Me I don't do so good with that stuff...
Good for you. Way beats being a waitress, like me. Stick with it...

Congratulations on your first day it sounds really interesting except for putting a cat to sleep i dont think i would be cut out for that but i suppose you get used to it especially if its in the pets best interest i have always been interested in being a vet and was seriously considering it but me and my boyfriend are starting up our own business now so ill have to stick to caring for my own pets lol.

I have a sister in law who is a veterinary nurse and she loves it.

I too will be popping on from time to time now and bugging your brains for advice.

Thanks for the congrats!

Today went better, I got the hang of alot of stuff and felt more productive. We had a couple hours where we had no clients and I told the vet I felt so unproductive and hate it but she wasn't doing too much either and they aren't hardasses about that stuff, esp. if your tasks are done. So, alot of the time was devoted to learning where the syringes and needles and vaccines were, what to get out for surgery, how to do the stuff up front...which I will learn more later on...

So yeah, I'm pretty happy with it. They'll start me out at 6 dollars an hour(most likely 3 days a week) and I'll get raises the longer I stay, the better I do, etc. I just want to start saving alot of money before moving out, I'd like something to fall back on. Plus, I get paid on my off days for watching Sarah and for watching her for about 3 hours everyday after work....that's an extra 50 a week. Not too shabby for living at home and having no bills! :)
