I have bought 2 different cameras for my husband for Christmas. I plan on taking one back, or keeping one for myself. Which one do you think is the better one for him? We're not professional photographers by any means. He just wants one of the new SLR cameras. Here's the ones I've bought.
I'm thinking the 8.2 megapixels is good enough for him. What do you think? I'm afraid the 12.8 mp is too much for just taking pictures of the kids and dogs but I don't know.
The 20D is a awesome camera, we had a tough decision between that and the Nikon that I got. However, it may be more camera then you need. With that camera, you will need to get a very large memory card, probably a 1-4 gig card. I have a 4 gig card for mine, well actually two. But I need my pictures to be huge for blowing them up.
The 5D is also a great camera. Although it has more megapixels, the quality is not as intense. With this camera you are paying for the extra megapixels but it is not being applied right in the pictures so you would be losing overall quality. NOW, with just taking everyday pictures of the family and the dogs, you honestly would never notice. It is if you went to blow something up to poster size that the differences would be more noticable. But you will also need a good sized card with this camera as well.
I have a preference to the 20D but mostly because that is what I had been planning on getting before I got my Nikon. As far as just general picture taking and really anything that you were going to blow up, they will both be great cameras. I think I would go for the 20D simply because of the price. No need to pay twice as much for something that is going to produce the same quality of pictures.
Good Choices by the way. If it were me, I would go with the 20D. Hope this helps!
Thanks a bunch Katz. He really wanted an SLR which is why I went for these. I already bought a 4 gig card for both cameras so that's all set. We do blow up the good ones to about 10x13 but thats it.
If the quality is not as good on the 5D, it's just all about the mp than I'm taking it back. I didn't know which one to get and right here at Christmas I was afraid to wait to make my decision so I just got both. I'll probably take the 5D back next week or whenever things aren't crazy anymore.
Thanks again!

Good Choice. I am actually jealous. I had to choose between the Nikon or the Canon and I chose the Nikon. I want to get the Canon too......maybe I can hint around to hubby for my birthday?? (It is in February) LOL
I would like to get a really good regular camera. We just have a Minolta. AT the time, we thought it was really fancy because it costs us 300 dollars. Then we noticed that most cameras like that are around that price and that ours is actually on the cheaper side, lol. Last spring, it took some great pics of the kids in the wildflowers out at my in-laws ranch, but every once in awhile, I don't really care for the pics it takes, especially if they are indoor pics. It seems to take better outdoor pics. Could be 'operator error' though..lol..I don't really know what I'm doing. I always put it on automatic and make it do all the work The camera shop I bought it from gave me a free pass to take some camera lessons, so I might take them up on that. I can see how you could get so into photography, if I knew what I was doing I would be really into it too I bought some black and white film the other day, so gonna see how that works....

You have a film Minolta? We have a digital Minolta A2 that we bought from the photographer that took our wedding pictures. We realized really quick that we needed another one, but hubby has the Minolta now for his business. There are alot of books and online sites that might be really helpful for you in learning some basic techniques.
