My mom had mentioned awhile back that she had a friend that breeds Shiba Inu's. I had mentioned that i really liked them. The lady had some adults for sale but they wouldn't be good with my kitties so that was not happening. Yesterday, my mom called and said the lady has a female puppy for me and she will be here in Arizona in 2 weeks. She is 12 weeks old which will make it much easier to get her to accept the kitties. I can't wait!!!
Shibas are pretty dogs. There's one who comes to the kennel where I work who is just adorable. If you haven't started already, do a ton of research on the breed. Shibas are notorious for being difficult to own.

A friend of mine has 2 shiba's. Those dogs are crazy. They are very sweet most of the time. I don't trust them with kids. The male is also dog aggressive. I have no idea if most shiba's are this way or not. They have worked hard on training. The female is pretty good although she follows the males lead. The biggest problem they have with them is keeping them at home. They have an 8 ft. fence and the dogs clear it. They put electric around the top of the fence, the dogs still cleared it. They bought a contraption to hook the dogs together, the dogs simultaneously cleared the fence. The dogs are never outside unattended but they love to jump and they love to run. Like I said, I have no idea if all Shiba's are like this but if they are you've got your work cut out for you. Like proto said, do a whole lot of research.

Good idea from Zoe! All those sled dog types are runaway material, they are clever, and love running distances. The pounds out here are full of Chows [Pits, Rotts, and Germans, also]. I think it is pretty hard to catch Chows out of the yard. These are not quite as fancy as Katz's Chow. Any more than the black and yellow Pit mixes are Labs, but they are quick dogs....Labs can climb, I imagine a lot of breeds are even better at it. We had a black Lab that scaled chain link like a cat, when I was a kid. Lovely dog, but that was how we aquired her, The previous owner just could not contain her, he said it was better to give her to us [boy did we build a strong kennel ...roofed with chain link as well]. She was quite the Houdini, taking the other dogs in her wake, often. I think I'm kinda fanatical on containment from that upbringing [they weren't too good at keeping dogs in the yard, and still aren't]. Poor containment has lost my family some very precious, and valuable animals. You can never have too many fences. I kinda like the look of block walls, or real solid walls like that. Someone can throw something in, but it cuts down on the fence fighting/barking at all passers... When I get a place of my own, I envision nothing less than airlock gates around the property. http://www.deh.gov.au/biodiversity/invasive/publications/fencing/general.html
Long article...here.... Gates that function to permit the access of members of the public into a reserve, either by car or by foot, can be problematic in that they rely on these people to adequately close the gate. Pedestrian gates used for this purpose should be designed to close and latch automatically - this is most often achieved by using a spring-hinged gate. The extra security provided by an airlock gate system is ideal as the passage between the two gates ensures that animals cannot slip unnoticed into or out of the enclosed area. Locking mechanisms can be designed for these airlock systems to prevent both gates being opened simultaneously. It's like at the dog park. That way some bozo can't let your dog out...not before you have a chance to catch the critter between the two fences...
Your friend's Shibas don't sound unsual, at least not according to what I've read and the owners I've talked to about them. They're really neat dogs, but they require much more work than the average pet owner wants to put into a dog. Of course, for the people who enjoy the work, they make fantastic pets. But that's true of any breed. As long as you like the qualities that give other people headaches, you'll do just fine.

We had friends that had 2 shiba's and they were awesome. I get daily training tips in my e-mail for shiba's and I figure they can't be any harder to own than the JRT's.........lol. The one we are getting is 12 weeks old so she might be easier to start with and we are hopeing our mature dogs will be a good influence. We will see.
I'm guessing you may live by the desert or something cause usually thats what the fences look like around those area's cause it's to keep the snakes and others out.
Oh yeah....lol We are about as far into the desert you can get. There are houses across the street from us and behind them is all desert. You'd have a blast with your bikes here...lol Every one has quads or dirt bikes out here and they will spend the weekends going out to play...come back for lunch...and back out again. The desert won't be out here for long though unfortunately since there are a ton of new houseing communities going up out here. But....our house went up 150k in 2 years. Not a bad investment. By the time we sell in 2 more years, it is expected to be worth close to 300k. We will see i guess. It is too bad we are taking away the desert but there's not much else we can do. I do feel bad though. We have not had any trouble with snakes in our yard yet but that day will come i'm sure. We have had scorpions and spiders though but we do have a good exterminator. We also get ground squirrles, lizards, humming birds, many other birds and dragon flies in our yard but they all like our pond.
