So i am not sure if i told everyone about the husky that i have been helping my friend and her boyfriend place. Well I took pictures of her a week ago to post her on an online classified add. Well, my friend called me today and said, "um...i think we have a problem, aphrodite kinda looks pregnant." So i just stopped by to see her. Well....she is sooooo pregnant! I cannot believe that a week ago she looked as slender as ever. Well, not only is she big already...i checked her nipples and she is already producing some milk. I called the vet and they said if she is already producing milk then plan on in the next few days having some puppies...!
Well they no NOTHING about having pups, so i told them no matter when it was to call me when she starts going into labor. I figure i have watched Thats My Baby on animal planet enough i might be a little more informed than them to helping if needed. We are setting her up in one of the empty bedrooms with a baby get up so she can get in or out, but so the other dogs won't come in and bother her. Then we are just going to set her up a little area in the closet she she feels comfy and safe. Also, just by chance actually she was switched to a puppy food about 2 1/2 weeks ago.
Now time to give me all the advice you can think of.
I know when my family raised Rotties we didn't have to help at all in the births. There was only 2 litters also ever born in my house. But anyways momma dog always picked her own safe place to have the pups. We tried making that desision(sp) for her but she kept on going to the master bath. And she always had the pups by herself perfectly fine. The only thing we had to watch out for was to make sure she didn't chew the umbilical cord too close......doing that will make them bleed to death. But this was in the 80s so maybe things have changed some.
I'm sure Kittys mom will be the expert here since she raises Labs.
Yep, my only experience is what you have. Thats my baby. Towels, ribbons of different color to identify, bugger sucker outers( and I have had kids, LOL) heating pads or lamp. Not sure which is best. Its good they put her on pup food, she needs the extra nutients. Supplements would be good to.
When I was younger my family used to breed and show Boxers, i've been threw a few litters. Paige is right BUT there are risks such as a breech puppy, still born delivery to quick back to back momma can't keep up with the placents. Also if a pup isn't breathing you can help it too start breathing, that I never did so maby Kitty can help you there.
Paige is also right about them picking their spot. We had one Boxer that refused to give birth in the welping pen, she wanted to do it on her end of the couch! Needless to say we had to cover the couch for her to have them cause she was giving birth pacing back and forth and refused to stop moveing until she got the couch.
She actually went around the neighborhood within a 3 block radius and found living nearby: a shih tzu (i lordy i hope not), a lab, a german shepherd, a pointer, and a great dane. So they will be the neighborhood surprise!
Oh, you're gonna be an "aunty"!!! If she bred to the German Shepherd, they'll be some mighty pretty pups. I've seen GSD/Husky crosses and they were all gorgeous. Yeah, let's hope she didn't breed to the Shih Tzu!! lmao. Hopefully she didn't breed to the GD, as they could be too big for her to deliver them by herself, I would think. I'm sure she'll be fine, but I have as much experience as you- That's my Baby!! lol
Well I guess you will find out who was her type soon enough. I don't think a shihtzu could reach could he. She'd really have to cater to him if it were him. LOL Maybe all of them too. She was probably like a hooker walkin down the street going house to house to see who wanted some action, LOL
My dog decided that the best place to have the fist pup was in my lap, she had the rest on my bed.
Tell them to watch her. When it is close she will pace, pant heavy, and be very restless. They will also notice her nesting (shearding paper, sheets blankets, or she will make a pile of soft items).
My dog was very clingy, and would not let me out of her site, and became very upset when I left the room. My brothers dog hide under the bed were no one could get to her, which wasn't very good as she need help.
I would have medical gloves handy, as well a steiral sicors(sp), clean towels, string (for tyeing off umbilcal cord if you have to cut it) or if mom cut them to short. you may also want a suction blub, sorry don't know what they are called. this is to clear mouth and nose of fluid
If mom isn't quick about it , it is ok to go ahead and break the sac and get them out, and clear the liquar away from their face. She will be rough with them, this will help them breath on their own. If they look like they are having trouble you can rub them briskly with a towel. Iam sure someone here will have more to add. I know Iam forgeting something.
I remembered something else. Have a heating pad or heating blanket. put the heating pad in a clothes basket and cover it with a towel, make sure the puppies can more off the heated area if they get to hot. this way they have a safe warm place while mom is moving around, and they will not get stepped on.
