So i was just visiting with my aunt and she was telling me a VERY sad story.
My aunt had 2 min schnauzers since they were babies. One was 15 the other was 10. Not too long after christmas she took them both in for their routine vaccs. Later that same night they both had strange reactions. She rushed them back to the vet and he said that their lymphs were failing. Within a week the 10yr old died of pancritis(sp) and kidney failure, and about 2 weeks after that the 15 yr old died of lymphoma(sp) and kidney failure. She now has over $2000 in vet bills from trying desperatly to save her dogs life. The vet said that it had nothing to do with the vaccs and it was completely coincidental. Keep in mind that these dogs have been fed raw diet their whole lives. Other than a little bit of arthritis in the older dog they have been completly healthy. They keep nothing around the house that the dogs could have gotten in. Since the deaths they have checked everything a million times. My uncle is sooo torn up about this and blames himself. He is the one that took them to have their vaccs done and he feels like it is his fault they are dead.
Do you guys have any similar stories? Is it coincidental, or does it sound like this vet is trying to cover his tracks.
There are some pets that have to have a certain brands of vaccs....for example, last week, a golden puppy came in for his 3rd set of vaccines, which included rabies, I drew up the vaccine (brand was Fort Dodge) and she called about an hour after the vaccines and said Suzie's face was swollen and I told her to bring her in now. It was nothing but a reaction to the rabies vaccine and she'll be given a different one from now on but her poor little face was like a sharpei's. It wasn't anyone's fault since we didn't know....but we do give vaccines every year and recommend them but I do think most vets over vaccinate....I'd at least do it every other year but I just get paranoid and all 3 of mine are up to date every year, and none of them have reactions but there's still a ahcne, but I'd feel more guilty if they got something that could have been prevented by a simple vaccine.
Oh yeah, they lie when they say a licensed vet must administer rabies, I have given rabies shots to animals, if they are under anesthesia and need their yearlys. All of the assistants can give rabies vaccines, we just don't do it in the rooms since we're the ones restraining the pets during shots.
I think given the fact that they both had issues, that it very well could have been the vaccines. Can she have them do an autopsy? That's so sad! I'm sorry your aunt had to go through that

Thats so sad. Personally I think when a dog gets into their senior years you should just give them what they need(rabies). When Oscar gets to be like 6 I probably won't worry about his yearlys and just get his rabies shot...you have to get a yearly rabie shot here because we have a high count of rabies in the county.
What Heff is describing is a Lepto reaction. I got my first Lepto reaction in 25 years with my last batch of Fort Dodge vaccines. I have used "the Puppy Shot" and "the Puppy Shot Booster for MANY years, with no reaction. This batch made one of my girls' head swell up like a basketball. No matter who I talked to, the company I purchased from, or the manufacturer, they say it is merely allergy to the vaccine in individual dogs. As this reacting dog had had the same vaccine, from the same company, several times....I am skeptical. My dogs are behind on their vaccines this year because of my reluctance to administer these "supposedly safe" vaccines. The reacting dog was pre-medicated with Benedryl and given her shot before I bred her...to get high titer in the pups. I am just waiting for the mood to strike me, to give the other dogs their shots. Yeah, I remain ABSOLUTELY disbelieving of anything a company bozo tells me.
