The largest commercial slaughter of marine mammals has begun off the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada. The quota has been set -- 325,000 seals, mostly babies, will be shot or bludgeoned to death by the hunt's end.
But thanks to the support of so many of our activists, we are delivering over 175,000 signatures and comments to the Prime Minister of Canada. Along with the Humane Society of the United States, we truly believe that these voices will make a difference.
They have before. In 1972, as a result of a massive international anti-seal campaign, the U.S. outlawed the importation of white coat seal pelts, encouraging other Western countries to follow suit. But recent demand for seal coats in countries like Russia and China has created new markets, increasing the number of seals allowed to be killed for their fur to an obscenely high number.
But we believe that this hunt can be halted again, and so we're increasing our signature goal to 230,000 signatures and encouraging you to sign the petition and forward the link to friends and family: http://go.care2.com/e/JFT/j0/EWA2
With enough public support, we can help stop this terrible hunt. Add your signature and tell Canada's new Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, that you do not support the annual slaughter of seals for their fur. Join The Humane Society of the United States in fighting to make this the last seal hunt the world ever sees!
I have no problem with hunting for food, then using the pelt for additional purposes. But to blatantly club an animals brains out just so someone can wear a designer coat is just plain WRONG.
How can they stand there and club them to death?????? My God, how brutal some people are!
