Stereotyping Comeback

Oh, I do so love my husband. He is sometimes quicker with his comebacks then me. We had decided to take Chi-Ching for a walk and we went to the park where dogs are allowed. We kept him on his leash. There were other people there and this kid maybe 6 came up and asked if he was a Samoyed(never fails), I told her no, he is a chow. And she said that he was real cute and that they had a Samoyed at home. Then she went to go play. We thought nothing of it and watched our girls play when this Biatch of a woman walks up and says "my daughter just said that your dog is a Chow. Do you not know they are dangerous dogs? What kind of parents would let a chow around their kids?" I was in complete shock that she had the nerve to come and say this to us. Chi-Ching had been laying under the picnic table behaving wonderfully. She put her hands on her hips, and said "well?", At that Chi-Ching got out and sat in front of us and, me still in shock could not think of anything to say, but my husband was not so easily swayed, he said with excellent coolness, "Do not stereotype my dog....he doesn't like it". And almost on cue Chi-Ching stood up. The lady put her hands down and started mumbling and grumbling as she walked away. We started laughing and then we noticed why Chingers had gotten up in the first place, when she placed her hands on her hips, he saw a baggy full of what looked like chips. My dog wanted a treat!! LOL

I have heard that vets consider them the dog most likely to bite, but I've never heard them referred to as dangerous. IMO, the only drawback to them is their ability to move fast, and climb, and a tendency to wander, that leads to more escape incidents. But any dog poorly contained, according to it's abilities to escape [mine DIG] are subject to escape attempts.

A shame someone would talk like that to you. A number of dog breeds that I don't care for, and would not own, I would never diss someone's pet to their face like that. I might diss the breed in some discussion, but to openly insult someone's pet, husband or child is just rude and deserves a nastier comeback than that lady got. She got off lucky.

That *****  I would have said, anyone who allows their kids to be around someone as rude and discrimantory as you should find another parent for their child as obviously you have no problem discriminating against a dog, do you discriminate against color too?   Then would have proceded to have some choice words for her.

Ahhh the uneducated people of the world....

As often as I hear people say chows are biters, I never hear of any incidents. Must all be word of mouth, just some knowledge in their cluttered brains, but I just don't see or hear of it happening.  There used to be a chow that lived around the block from me, around their kids always.  He died of cancer.

Puttin,
Most of the people that will say that chows are biter are the people who were around when they were WAY overbred with no thought to temperment. They were popular because they are cute puppies, but they need ALOT of socialization to teach them to like other people, otherwise they get really protective of their home and family. Most people did not care to socialize, and others wanted a protection dog. Sadly, that really ruined the chow breed for a while.

Breeders have been working hard to get the temperment back to aware and cautious and NOT aggressive. They are supposed to be protective.

An aggressive chow is a poor representation of the breed. It is usually a result of lack of socialization.

I tell this to SO many people, I just get tired of it and so does my husband and I think that is why he said what he did. I don't think there would have been any changing her mind anyway.

I figured that they were a breed that suffered "cute little puppy" syndrome. They are terribly cute and fuzzy as babies.
I avoid "little and cute" buyers like the plague. Usually I tell them they can get the puppy when it's 3 months old [I don't use the cutesy 12 weeks] and they will have to pay for it in full in order to reserve it, that blows them off. I also happen to mention that the dog will be large, full sized and very destructive in 2 months after purchase. Needless to say, only folks that have had Labs before are undaunted by my exaggerated descriptions.

that would have been great to see her reaction to what he said! ha....I hate stereotypes. I've seen my share of mean dogs at the clinic, and they're usually the breeds that aren't neutered...not trying to stereotype but that is a fact, I just don't even bother to restrain unneutered big dogs. The larger breeds like rotties and pits, especially but when they are neutered they are the biggest babies. I don't mind to pet them and rough them up. ha

I know a lot of vets in my area will not see Chows. Only a select few will and they are the ones that charge you a arm and leg. I've seen my share of biters when it comes to Chows. Back when we were showing our Boxers, the Chows would have the whole place to themselves. On that note i've also seen my share of fluffy love bugs. My Hubbys Joey before he died was the best dog i've ever seen. My brother in laws male Chow well lets just say he's the last Chow you would ever want to breed, he's aggressive toward everyone\everthing but my brother in law, his female is scared to death of people and other animals.

But that *B* wouldn't have been so lucky if it twas I she said that to! Your hubby is way to nice!

Thanks. We get so tired of repeating ourselves over and over. Comes with the territory I suppose. My hubby is a great guy and can think quick on his feet, I am usually going "I wish I had said this", or "I wish I had said that".

Haveing a Chow is like having any other "aggressive" breed. I get crap all the time cause of Storm, but little does anyone know, or care to find out cause she might eat them she's the biggest baby around. She' lick ya to death before the thought of bitting ever entered her mind. After awhile you get used to it and it just comes to you when someone says something stupid, trust me you will have many other times you can say something witty!

I was bit by my sister's chow, my son was bit by a chow and my sister and brother were bit by chows...............that being said, i have seen kids bit by labs, people bit by chih's, most small breeds...lol and an aussie but never seen anyone bit by a pit, boxer, shepherd, rottie or doberman.  Just goes to show you never know what will bite.  Even though i have seen more bites by chows, i would never put them in an aggressive catagory or be rude to someone because they own one.  My spitz or jrt would bite before chingy would

LOL, we actually praised him, not because he was being protective(I don't think he really was) but because he didn't try to hide like he does when most people approach briskly. He was curious and wanted a treat.

Chi-Ching is by far ALOT more social now. We have been working very hard and it is finally paying off.
