I took him to the vet today for his seizures they did full blood workup and the Vet will be calling me tommorrow with the results.IM hoping it isn't going to be anything too serious. He also has a double earinfection, poor little guy.He seems finr though. I'LL fill you in after the vet calls. Oh he did say he wouldn't be starting him on any phenobarbital if they stay the say in frequency and severity.
Good luck..Please do let the vet give the pup Primor. It a drug that was taken off the market for humans. My OLD vet gave it to one of my collies and in less than 24 hours she had to be put down as it caused a severe stroke.
What kind of dog is Shadow? I have a Shadow who is a blue merle collie
From what my vet told me it is quite possible the underlying reason for the seizure could quite possibly have been Shadow's ear infections. He said that many different things can possibly trigger dogs' seizures: fever, trauma, over-excitement, etc. Hopefully nothing will show up on the blood work & once the infection is cleared up Shadow will be seizure-free! I'm keeping my fingers crossed!
Thanks Denise,He didn't mention that about an ear infection, strange.IM not too impressed with this vet. Im still waiting to hear something,it's 4:10 here in california, and he said he would call with the results today.Maybe it is the ear infection and he didn't mention that because I might have opt out on the 80 dollar blood work HMM Do a treat and wait I wanted to add that at times Shadows head feels hot, is this normal, or could it have been a fever?
Well no call from the Vet today,I waited until 6:15 and called and they said he was gone until the end of the week and took my name and number and said they would have a Dr.call me, still no call. Like I said before im going to find a different Vet.When I went yesterday I thought it was kind of strange that the vet never touched Shadow when we were talking. I put Shadow on the table and he was asking me different questions, when I said he had bad teeth ,smelly ears he never looked ,isn't that strange? Not once did he touch him !Then he told me if there was a table cleared off in back his assistant would come and get Shadow to draw the blood.Does your vet examine your dog in front of you? This was our first time going to this vet.
My vet always touches my dogs. Even before he examines them, he pets them and says "hello." Also, if I suggest that one of my dogs has a problem, such as an ear infection, the vet checks out the problem right away. And I always receive test results in a timely manner. I feel very comfortable around my dogs' vet, and I can tell my dogs do, too. I suggest you find another vet for Shadow. You can easily find someone who will be more responsive than this guy was.

Well when I made the appointment over the phone the receptionist said the office call was to include a general checkup. Now he could have very well did that in the back. But I just thought it was a little strange.I had went there once with a friend when she adopted a shelter dog she got a free exam with this vet and he was hands on then.If I don't hear anything by mid afternoon,I will GO down there!!! I'll keep you posted. Thanks
Yes, that's what I meant...Sorry...One of my collies had a bad ear infection and she would pant and whine and then she had a seizure. It turned out she had ruptured her ear drum. She had some minor surgery and then it was fine.
The Primor is a drug that was given to humans for kidney and bladder problems mostly but then was taken off the market becaue several people died as a result from taking it. Some vets use it for all different symptoms. But it is as dangerous to a dog as it is to a human. When this happed to my collie and the vet came here to put her down I almost smacked her. As she was giving THE shot she turned and said to me, "Gee, I guess it was the primor." I threw her out of the house.
Shadow- have you heard anything? By the way, my vet always examines my dogs himself right in front of me... that sounds very strange! Let us know what you find out.
The Vet called and said everything came back within the normal range. I ask about the ear infection causing seizures, and he said no. He said I have the option of going to a neuroligist for a MRI to see if he has a tumor or a bleed.Another option was to wait, since I have only had him since November and see how it goes, and if they get worse to medicate him.So I will wait and watch Shadow and see how it goes. Thanks everyone !!!
I am totally amazed that the vet never interacted with Shadow at all in the examination room! As soon as any of them walk into the room, whether it is a tech or any one of the vets in the practice, I get a quick hi & then they squat right down to greet my dog. All exams, except drawing blood or xrays, are done right in the room with me. Even when Farley used to have major ear infections & needed a thorough ear cleaning & treatment they would do it with me there.
I can understand taking Shadow back to another room for an exam only if he was being very timid and/or uncontrollable and your assistance wasn't enough and/or if it seemed as tho your presence was exaggerating a negative response from him. If that wasn't the case I would definitely be looking for a new vet.
Give Shadow a hug for me & tell him Farley and Chloe are sending vibes his way that he has no more seizures!

Well that could have very well been the case Denise.Shadow is a very timid dog, everything makes him shake. He was scared Monday and shaking and hunkered down.Is hunkered even a word or is that the okie in me?I dont know alot about dogs ,maybe he thought it was best if he did an exam away from me.
It's very possible that was the reason for it. One thing I have learned over the years (of which there have been far too many) is not to hold back from asking any questions especially when it comes to a loved one, be it skin or fur. If something doesn't seem right or if you have a question never be shy about speaking to your vet about it. A good vet will understand your concern and happily answer any questions you have. Just like one of our doctors, if they won't discuss an issue with us we tend to lose our confidence in them. We are the speakers for our furpals so if we have concerns and don't feel the vet is willing to address them with us it might be worthwhile to find a qualified vet who also has good communication skills with us & our furpals.
