Interesting Shelter Program

Stray Rescue of St. Louis has started a program called rent-a-pet.  The organization allows people who are thinking about fostering or adopting to take a pet home for the weekend as a trial run.  Stray Rescue provides everything the people will need to care for the animal over the weekend such as food, bowls, leash, et cetera.  If the weekend goes well, then the people who cared for the animal can adopt or foster him/her.  This program is a neat idea because it allows people who are nervous about taking in a shelter animal the chance to see how great shelter pets can be.  Here is a link that describes the program: http://www.strayrescue.org/rent_pet.html.

I think that is a great idea. One of the shelters here in FW that I talked with will not let me bring the dog home that I was interested in. She said, they feel it is too stressful on the dog to go to different houses and then be brought back.....

I can definitely see both sides of the coin there....if I was to adopt I would certainly like to have that trial run, but I can imagine that it would be stressful for the dog.

When my mom adopted her bassett (from a family), they let her take the dog home before she made a decision.  She also brought a Great Pyr home last weekend for a trial run.  Good thing she did, because although she loved the dog, her other two dogs did not at all.

That is an interesting concept.  In checking their site it seems as tho there are very few who are eligible for that program and I think that is probably a good idea & based on the individual dogs' temperment.  They probably only select the dogs for this program that have the most outgoing personalities and aren't easily rattled by change.

In looking thru all their dogs available for adoption tho my heart was breaking at the apparent abuse & neglect many of them were subjected to.  Hopefully every single one of them will find a loving, forever home where all their bad memories will disappear!

I'm sure the organization picks the dogs for the program carefully and removes them from the program if they see any signs of trouble.

Yes, many of the dogs at this shelter have led very unfortunate lives.  Stray Rescue of St. Louis, the group that has the rent-a-pet program, is really quite something.  The group actually pulls entire packs of stray dogs off of the streets, instead of just pulling dogs from the SPCA/Humane Society.  The group will go into the worst neighborhoods, including neighborhoods where the residents can't get phone or ambulance service, to rescue dogs, and it takes in the dogs that nobody wants, including the injured, the diseased, the feral, whatever.  The group truly has a no dog left behind philosophy.
