canned food

Lastnight I went to petsmart to buy some canned food.I wanted to start giving Shadow some canned in the evening for variety.I usually feed dried am and pm.After going to the vet on Monday,I realized I was giving to many treats. The lady working there said I should only give him a tablespoon.I didn't understand that at all, since it would be his second meal.Does anyone on here feed both canned and dry? Hey has anyone seen Julie?

I have never used canned food so I can't really share any experience.  I have always thought dry kibble was better for their teeth.  Perhaps for a change of pace you could mix a couple of spoonfuls in with the dry.  I'm sure if I offered canned to my 2 they'd gobble it up in a second flat and probably end up not wanting to eat the dry afterwards.

As far as treats go there are healthy treats that you can give Shadow such as carrots which alot of dogs love - of course, my 2 just turn their noses up at them!  I am sure there are also lo-cal treats available at pet supply stores.

I have not seen Julie in a while

I have never fed my dogs canned dog food. I have always heard that it is not good for them. I really have no idea why, but that is what I have always heard. Seems like I heard that it will make there bowels soft.. I may have totally dreamed that up, but maybe somebody else can help us here. I bet Denise or protodog can!

I have used both canned and dry.  Their stool is softer on canned food (at least for my dogs).   They love the canned food so much better so now i mix half and half.  That way they get the kibble that is good for their teeth and they get the soft food (canned) which they love.  Their stool is normal on it and they love the mixture.

Also, canned food has pess protein because it has so much moisture in it so adding in the dry helps them get more protein.

I think you need to have their ears cropped between 9-12 weeks of age. Here is a link trying to convince you not to crop them. We didn't, mainly because the person we bought her from didn't do it, but you can see by her picture, her ears look like she could take off flying at any time. I think they are cute, though. Everyone has their own opinion on those things. She does have her tail docked...

Also- I do not think you will be disappointed with a min. Schnauzer. I use to think I did not like them because I thought they were yappy and some can be, but I have had 2 mix schnauzer pups and 1 full bred and none of them are very yappy. They bark sometimes, but not bad. They are pretty smart and if someone is willing to work with them, I think they are easily trained. I am not the most dedicated at the training thing, but they are still pretty smart. I just have a hard time with the housebreaking because I do not follow the crating thing consistently and they have accidents daily! I am hoping they will come along

Hershey just turned 1 year old today and Jazz (full min. schnauzer) is only 6 months old. She is better about going outside than Hershey is (part poodle/part schnauzer).

Oh yeah- here is another link http://prissyspooches.com/Puppies.htm. She was faye_girly on tp and in fact, registered here as well, but I have not seen her in while. She is very knowledgeable about dogs, especially min. schnauzers. I wish she would come back to our forum. Look at her website. If you have questions, you can email her and while you are at it, you might tell her that we miss her!!

I'm here...finally.  I've been having big time puter problems...so I've been out of the forums or a while.

I feed both canned and dry.  Morning and night.  I give Chloe' 1/2 cup of food with a big spoonful of canned, I use a soup spoon.  I warm it up in the microwave for 12 seconds to take the chill out of it.  I also give her sealmeal. It is alot like missing link.  I give her a small spoon of canned pumpkin twice a week with her meals.  It adds fiber to her diet.  She is very healthly and has a great coat.

Jawlaw thanks,I have noticed most ads of the schnauzers don't have their ears done.My MIL has two, they aren't yappers either. She said they started out to be but she trained them not to bark. I have been looking for a second dog for a couple of months, doing the research.I haven't decided just yet.I like Westies too !!!!                                    Hey, Julie there you are.  I thought you might still be sick. So, I guess thats why the lady at petsmart said a tablespoon, I guess she assumed I would be mixing it with the kibble. Well, I did that this morning and he ate it all at once instead of picking.Today is bath time ,so he is going to have another reason to hate me.

Canned food contains so much water that it doesn't provide much nutrition for a dog.  I don't give it to my dogs, but I know a number of people who use it sort of like a condiment, mixing a little in with dry food.  The dogs like it and still receive the nutrition they need from the dry food.

In addition to carrots, Natural Balance dog food rolls make excellent treats.  They aren't junk food like treats are, and my dogs love them.  Well, McKeever loves them, and Argus, who has never enjoyed eating, actually gets excited about them from time to time.
