First let me give you guys some history before i ask my question. For the longest time I have been a bad mommy and have not walked my dogs, but they have always played out in the yard and occasionally go to the dog park. I feed Lana Canidae, she is 45 pounds. Syd gets Natural Choice for sensitive stomachs and she is 35 pounds. Normally I feed them each a little over a cup of dry in the AM and little over a cup of dry in the PM.
Now for my question. For the last week I have been taking them on hour walks. And as of a couple days ago I started taking them on 50min jogs. Since I increased their amount of exercise, should I increase the amount of food I am giving them and if so by how much? Syd isn't skinny but you can kind of see her ribs, not all of them, just like the last 3. I'm worried I'm not giving them enough. All together they get about 2 cups a day each of dry.
Also another questoin not food related. I havnt gotten good sleep in about 7 months. All the dogs sleep with me in my bedroom with the door closed, cause i cant trust them roaming in the middle of the night. In the early morning if I move my arm while I sleep or roll over Lana and Winnie get up and start pacing and breathing in my face. Since I'm a light sleeper, once that wakes me I'm up for good. Syd is the only one who doesnt do this. So for the last couple nights I have put Lana and Winnie in their dog room, Lana in her crate in the dog room and Winnie free roaming in the dog room. I have gotten so much sleep now, i am so happy but at the same time feel guilty for making those two sleep in there. I just need some sleep! What would you guys do if this was your situation? Thanks everyone!
I would say, as for the food, just watch their weight. If they start loosing, adjust the food up but only a little. As for putting them in the dog room or crate, i crate 2 of mine at night. that is their sleep time and their "bedroom" like you have yours. i think it is ok as long as they get enough time with you during the day. Just my opinion.
You are a good mom If they bug you, it is good to have a separate room for them, canines tend to try to dominate. If you are alpha, you set the schedule and will be the whereall/byall that they live by. I have x-large cages inside the house. The dogs are quite comfy w/ the lixit bottle and the drip catch. My neighbors joke that my dogs look like they are being punished when I leave them outside for a bit. Best prices because of shipping http://www.drsfostersmith.com I use the large heavy cages, but the portables are neat if you need to move them and reinforce the edges...
I think what you are doing is fine & I agree - just watch their weight & adjust as needed. They are fine being separated from you at nite & I bet with the additional exercise they are getting they are just zonking out & having good healthy sleeps themselves!
I wish Oscar would stay out of my room at night. Most of the night he sleeps in the living room but at about 4 or 5 he comes slamming into the bedroom. I really need to get a lock on my door because he can open it, but then when my daughter gets up I don't want her banging on the door trying to get in. And when Oscar jumps on the bed you can really feel it. And to buy a crate large enough for his big butt would cost me an arm and a leg, plus my house is small and a crate that large would take up way too much room. But I don't think you are mean for kicking them in another room for the night, I think its smart.
I put the cage in a corner, with a light board on top and use it for a shelf. The dog's car crate goes there and the treats and food pans, the cage has the dog's water in a lixit bottle so there is no separate area in the house for food and water, they eat in their kennels. You could also put houseplants on it or something spiffier. The on-line cages seem to cost more than the phone bought from catalog. Those are $135+$10. shipping. #pa5329 The fold-ups are nice, but need reinforcing with snaps on the edges
