Kula yanked off the towel collar tonight and has left his stitches and bandages alone for over 2 hours now! I'm watching him like a hawk, but hopefully he's ready to just let things be. He was SO relieved to get that towel off his neck...just scratched, and scratched, and scratched! He looked so pitiful before!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he'll behave until we can get these stitches out next weekend....
Thats great!! I remember when ours were nuetered they used the stiches that desolved. We didn't have to go back to the vet after the surgery. Wonder why they didn't do that with your dog. Or is that not an option?
I would have preferred self dissolving stitches, but it's just not my vet's way of doing things. She tends to be a little old fashioned in some of her ways, but she's so great with Kula I just go with some of that.

Good for him!! I guess we never had a problem with Chopper chewing at his stitches. I think he did get the self-dissolving kind. How come they didn't use those I wonder?? Oh well, as long as he's leaving them alone, it doesn't matter. When did you say he was getting them out??
Kula is still doing great and scheduled to get his stitches out next Friday. He is just SO much happier without that collar on! He has had a couple of accidents since the surgery, but he's been drinking TONS of water due to the prednisone. He just has one more day of that, so hopefully we're just about in the clear!
Thats great! I have a question though. This may sound stupid. What was the prednisone for? Oscar didn't have to take anything after him being neutered, neither did the lab we had. But that was a few years ago now, is that a new thing? Maybe its just where I live or something.
Our vet gives a combination of prednisone (6 days) and an antibiotic (10 days) after neuter or spay. She has found that the prednisone keeps the swelling down which alleviates any pain, so no need for pain meds. She prefers to do it that way because so many of the pain meds keep the dog pretty zonked.
It seems to be working for Kula. He's had no swelling at all and, based on his activity level, hasn't seemed to have any discomfort.
Did your dogs have any meds after surgery? Maybe my vet is really on the cautious side????
Same here - nothing for either Farley or Chloe & by the next day they wanted to be as active as usual & it was tough keeping them a little quieter. Personally I would try to avoid prednisone especially whenever possible.
