My very close friend just adopted a 14 week lab mix puppy this weekend. She is doing great overall but my friend is having trouble with getting her to go outside to go potty. In the morning (when she REALLY has to go) she runs right outside and goes potty. Other than the morning though, the pup won't go outside and if she is carried outside she wants to run back inside OR she just sits on the ground and won't move. No sniffing, no nothing. But when she brings her back inside she will have an accident. She called me for advice and I've never had this problem. Any suggestions? She tried treats but I guess the pup just wants to sit there! Any suggestions would be great! Thanks!
I saw this thing at petsmart called a "pee post". I have no idea if it works. You pound it in the spot where you want them to go and the scent is supposed to attract them to go there. Its about ten bucks. Thinking of trying it myself.
ohhh, good idea!!! I used that with harry and it really worked. I should warn you though it is REALLY stinky. We have to keep it in the basement! I never thought using that for her though--thanks for the suggestions :)
I have had a lot of experience with the potty training lately so here's my take......
Bringing her out side first thing in the morning is great and when she pees, praise big time. Take her out every hour since her bladder is small and definately after a meal. Since she is just sitting there, walk around and get her to follow. Walking makes them hafta pee more If she will bounce and play, that's even better. She might have to stay with her outside for a little bit and as soon as she pees, praise big. I had a dog that wouldn't pee or poo if i was watching him so i had to look away.........lol. Hope this helps.
Make sure she is fed outside. Usually they potty after a meal, and it makes for good association mentally. I had issues with Megan this year, she became terrified of going out all of a sudden, either she was attacked by a raccon one night, or the new neighbors that moved in freaked her, regardless, she would not go out. I still drag her 2yr old, 50# butt out at night, but she goes out happily during the day now. She ate outside for several months and it did help. It was on my dog trainer's advise. Megan's cage is near to the door now and I don't have to drag her through the entire house to get to the back door, either. With pups I toss a cookie outside for them, or leave a few out, so that they get cookies everytime they go out, like an Easter egg hunt everyday. Makes going out a lot more fun. Use tiny bacon flavored Mother Hubbard cookies, or spray bacon flavored cheese whiz on something real small and put them about.
